Lost Boy Luis Armando Albino Reunites With Family After 73 Years

A niece's relentless search through DNA testing leads to long-awaited reunion full of love and closure

A remarkable story of resilience and hope has emerged from Oakland, California, where Luis Armando Albino, who was kidnapped at just six years old, was finally found alive after 73 long years.

On February 21, 1951, Luis was abducted from Jefferson Square Park by a woman who lured him away with the promise of candy. His older brother, Roger, was with him at the time and reported seeing the woman, who wore a bandana, lead Luis away. The young boy was never seen by his family again, and searches involving local police, Coast Guard personnel, and army soldiers yielded no results.

For 73 years, Luis's family kept the flame of hope alive, particularly his mother, who held onto the belief she would one day see her son again. Sadly, she passed away in 2005 at the age of 92, never knowing what had happened to Luis, who was raised by another family on the East Coast after being taken from his home.

This soon-to-be heartwarming ending can be credited to the determination of Luis’s niece, Alida Alequin, who never gave up on her quest to find him. Alida, now 63, embarked on her search by initially conducting her own DNA test out of curiosity. To her surprise, she discovered she was a 22% match to someone named Luis, who she later learned was her long-lost uncle.

Despite this initial lead, Alida didn't hear back from him. Yet, her drive to unearth the truth only grew stronger. Her daughters began digging through online articles, which led them to old documents and microfilm clippings at the Oakland Public Library. Eventually, they managed to piece together enough information for law enforcement to reopen the cold case.

Working alongside the Department of Justice and the FBI, Alida pieced together Luis’s life after the abduction. He had been raised by another couple in New York City, where he grew up thinking they were his parents. Meanwhile, many details of the events surrounding his kidnapping remained murky; it seemed he had been kept unaware of his past. When investigators found him, they confirmed it was Luis through DNA, prompting Alida to scream with joy when she received the news.

Eventually, the long-awaited reunion took place, and for the first time since his abduction, Luis met his brother Roger again. Roger was battling cancer, but the reunion allowed him to find peace before his death just weeks later. "They hugged each other tightly and shared their experiences," Alida recalled, highlighting the emotional weight of the moment.

While Luis has not yet spoken publicly about his ordeal, he has shared some faint memories of his captivity with his family. The people he thought were his parents have since passed away, leaving many questions unanswered.

This case serves as both tragic and heartening. It reveals the tenacity of families determined to find their loved ones and the impact modern technology, like DNA testing, can have on long-lost kin. Although Luis missed the chance to reconnect with his mother, there are signs she always believed she would see her child again, carrying hope to her grave. Alida believes her grandmother would have been proud of her relentless pursuit of truth, stating, "I think she would have been very happy to see Luis alive. She never forgot him. She kept his memory alive throughout her life."
Alida's message to other families still searching for their loved ones is one of unwavering hope: "Don’t give up." This powerful reunion couldn’t erase the past, but it brought closure to years of longing and searching. Luis's story is living proof of how love and perseverance can finally triumph over the darkest of times. The community is left with this message of hope amid the shadows of loss and sorrow. Remembering those who have been lost, and continuing the search for truth is the key to healing for families all around the world.
