BMKG Predicts Heavy Rain In East Kalimantan For Lebaran

Residents urged to prepare for potential floods and landslides as rain forecast starts today until Lebaran.

As the holy month of Ramadan draws to a close, residents of East Kalimantan, Indonesia, are bracing for a significant shift in weather patterns that may coincide with the celebrations of Lebaran 1446 Hijriah. The Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) in Samarinda has issued a forecast predicting an 80-90 percent chance of rain starting today and continuing through the first day of Lebaran on March 31, 2025.

Riza Arian Noor, the head of BMKG’s Samarinda station, emphasized the potential severity of this weather pattern. "Peluang hujan antara 80-90 persen ini dengan kategori menengah antara 50-150 mm, sehingga semua pihak diharapkan mewaspadai dampaknya seperti banjir, sungai meluap, jalan licin, dan tanah longsor," he warned, outlining the various hazards associated with the impending rainfall.

The forecasted rainfall is categorized as moderate, placing it in the 50-150 mm range. Residents are urged to take precautions against the risks of flooding, overflowing rivers, slippery roads, and landslides that may arise from the expected heavy downpours.

Moreover, the agency also noted the possibility of falling trees due to heavy rains which could be accompanied by lightning and strong winds. Riza Arian Noor added, "Kemudian pada prakiraan deterministik sifat hujan dasarian III Maret 2025, wilayah Kaltim umumnya diprakirakan memiliki sifat hujan kategori normal antara 85-15 persen hingga di atas normal antara 116-150 persen." This means that most of the region will experience rainfall levels that are typical for this time of year but with certain areas possibly exceeding those averages.

Notably, areas in West Kutai Regency might experience below-average rainfall, with predictions placing them in the lower category of 50-84 percent normal rainfall. This contrast highlights the variable weather conditions across the region.

Recent monitoring of rainfall patterns has revealed a concerning trend. Several areas in East Kalimantan experienced notably dry conditions leading up to this forecast. Riza Arian Noor reported that the area had "Wilayah Kaltim yang mengalami hari tanpa hujan berada dalam kriteria sangat pendek antara 1-5 hari," indicating that many districts have experienced only a brief spell without rain.

Specifically, the sub-districts of Muara Jawa, Loa Kulu, Tenggarong, and Loa Janan, all located in Kutai Kartanegara Regency, reported the longest duration of dry days, with some areas remaining rain-free for up to three days. This drier period has caused local farmers and residents to express concerns about soil moisture levels and agricultural productivity.

The upcoming rainfall, coupled with the potential for intense storms, poses significant implications not only for everyday life but also for preparations related to the Lebaran festivities, a time when families typically gather.

Residents are reminded to stay vigilant and prepare for the possibility of disruptive weather events. Local authorities and community organizations are working to ensure that families are informed about the risks and safety measures in light of the changing weather conditions.

As Lebaran approaches, East Kalimantan’s communities are eager to maintain a spirit of celebration while being mindful of weather forecasts that could alter their holiday plans. Ensuring safety and preparedness is paramount as they navigate this period of anticipated rainfall amidst the cultural significance of the festivities.

With the forecast indicating a period of increased precipitation, local officials and residents alike are bracing for changes that may affect both their festivities and daily life, signaling a need for caution as they celebrate this important occasion.
