Blake Lively Sues Justin Baldoni Over Sexual Harassment Allegations

The actress claims systemic retaliatory tactics followed her complaints about Baldoni's behavior during filming.

Blake Lively has filed a lawsuit against her co-star and director Justin Baldoni, alleging sexual harassment and retaliation, raising significant concerns about workplace safety within the entertainment industry. The lawsuit, which emerged shortly after the release of their film 'It Ends With Us,' claims Baldoni's behavior caused her severe emotional distress.

The complaint alleges multiple invasive incidents, including Baldoni reportedly asking Lively intrusive personal questions. Among the serious claims, she states he made offensive comments about her personal life, tried to coerce her consent for graphic content, and engaged unprofessionally during filming.

Lively's civil complaint was filed on December 20, shortly after reports of tension surfaced between the two actors during the promotional tour for their film. Fans began to notice the pair were not paired together for interviews, leading to speculation about their off-screen relationship.

Sources from The New York Times indicate this lawsuit stemmed from earlier meetings, where Lively purportedly laid out demands for her participation on set, along with her husband Ryan Reynolds, who was also present. She asserted conditions to protect her comfort, such as prohibiting discussions related to Baldoni's alleged history with pornography and unwanted personal inquiries like questions about her weight or family.

The lawsuit alleges Baldoni attempted to add inappropriate scenes without Lively’s consent. It outlines how Baldoni was reported to have suggested including intimate moments between their characters, such as orgasming together on their wedding night, citing such scenes were personally important to him.

“Mr. Baldoni then intrusively asked Ms. Lively whether she and her husband climax simultaneously during intercourse, which Ms. Lively found invasive and refused to discuss,” the lawsuit states. This emphasis on personal topics and boundaries has raised alarm signals about his intent and professionalism.

Baldoni’s legal representative, Bryan Freedman, has countered these claims, labeling them as 'categorically false' and accusing Lively of attempting to fix her personal image following public scrutiny stemming from her actions during the film's promotional events. He stated: “It is shameful… as yet another desperate attempt to ‘fix’ her negative reputation.”

Supporting Lively, her co-stars from 'The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants' voiced their solidarity publicly. America Ferrera, Amber Tamblyn, and Alexis Bledel expressed their outrage at what they termed a “premeditated and vindictive effort” against Lively, highlighting her bravery for speaking out.

“We stand with her… it is appalling to read the evidence of effort to discredit her voice,” they stated. Their statement also commented on the broader issues surrounding the exploitation of domestic violence narratives, stressing the need for safe working environments.

Colleen Hoover, the author behind 'It Ends With Us,' has also come to Lively’s defense via social media, affirming her character and contributions to the project. Lively expressed her hope to shed light on the tactics used against individuals speaking out against misconduct, saying, “I hope my legal action helps pull back the curtain on these sinister retaliatory tactics to harm people who speak up about misconduct and helps protect others who may be targeted.”

Further igniting the controversy, it was reported Baldoni was swiftly dropped by William Morris Endeavor (WME), the talent agency representing both actors, due to the serious nature of the allegations. WME’s decision demonstrates the urgency and gravity surrounding Lively's lawsuit and highlights industry tensions concerning safety and accountability.

A prominent element of Lively’s legal narrative revolves around Baldoni's alleged smear campaign against her, which reportedly involved employing crisis communication strategies aimed at discrediting her claims. The filing suggests Prince Namor's tactical manipulation through planted stories to sway public perception and damage her reputation.

Lively's comprehensive legal action not only has the potential to create ripples in Hollywood but also spotlights issues of harassment and the psychological impacts on those involved. The outcome remains to be seen as both sides prepare for the legal battle, but the case has garnered widespread attention made stronger by public support from her friends and fellow actors.

Discussions related to the case have prompted audiences to reflect on the importance of institutional accountability and the need for decisive action against harassment within the industry. The urgency of this conversation becomes even more pronounced when considering the powerful figures involved.

With much at stake, both Lively and Baldoni are expected to take their claims to court, with Lively advocating for not just her reputation, but perhaps catalyzing systemic changes for countless others.
