Blackhawks Trade Seth Jones To Panthers For Knight

Chicago secures future asset as trade revamps both teams' strategies

The Chicago Blackhawks made significant headlines on March 1, 2025, by trading defenseman Seth Jones to the Florida Panthers, marking a pivotal shift for both franchises. The deal came just nine days after Jones publicly requested to be traded, expressing his desire to give himself 'a chance to win' during his career.

Jones, who averaged over 24 minutes on ice per game, joined the Panthers as they sought to bolster their defense following the departure of notable players like Brandon Montour and Oliver Ekman-Larsson, both of whom left after the Panthers' recent Stanley Cup victory. The Blackhawks managed to negotiate favorable terms, retaining just 26% of Jones' hefty cap hit, which stands at $9.5 million and runs through the 2029-30 season. This financial maneuver has eased some salary cap concerns for Chicago, who has been rebuilding.

Alongside Jones, the Panthers sent 23-year-old goalie Spencer Knight to Chicago, who has faced his share of challenges this season. With Knight's 2.40 goals-against average—improved to 1.66 since January 3—he is viewed as the potential starting goaltender for the Blackhawks moving forward. The deal also includes future draft picks: the Blackhawks acquired not only Knight but also conditional picks, including a first-round pick for 2026, which might become useful down the line.

Before finalizing the trade, the Blackhawks had to balance the salary cap dynamics of retaining some of Jones’ contract against the potential benefits of the trade. General Manager Kyle Davidson faced the difficult task of adequately addressing Jones’ needs as well as the team's future. Jones, with a combined -108 over four seasons with the Blackhawks, aimed for redemption and success with the Panthers, who currently have aspirations for another championship.

Looking to the current Blackhawks roster, Davidson has other trade options on the board as the deadline approaches on March 7, 2025. Players like Ryan Donato, Lukas Reichel, and Petr Mrazek are now under consideration as potential trade pieces, with Donato particularly standing out after scoring 21 goals this season. His impressive tally includes 17 goals during five-on-five play, which ranks him tied for 10th league-wide. While Davidson remains open to offers, he is under no immediate pressure to trade the forward, recognizing the value he brings to the team.

Reichel, with his currently manageable $1.2 million cap hit, also remains with the team for now after showcasing his potential during recent games. Reichel's strong performance, highlighted by his goal and assist on March 1, has solidified his place on the roster, at least until the trade deadline has passed.

Meanwhile, Petr Mrazek's situation has become increasingly complex for the Blackhawks. Having signed Laurent Brossoit as their potential future starter, Mrazek's performance has dipped considerably this season, going from posting .927 saves percentage back in November to just .890 for the season. With another year left on his $4.25 million contract, Davidson may find it challenging to move Mrazek before the deadline.

The trade of Jones has introduced even more questions around the future of Connor Murphy and other players. Murphy, also under contract with one more year remaining at $4.4 million, may now find himself staying put, as the Blackhawks are likely focused on evaluating their roster without Jones.

Other players like Craig Smith and Pat Maroon may also become trade targets as contenders browse for depth players. Smith, with his modest eight goals and seven assists this season, is quickly becoming second on the depth scoring list and could be ideal for teams seeking offensive help. Maroon holds a three-time Cup winner title and could appeal to teams wishing to add experience and leadership at low cost.

For the Blackhawks, the Jones trade symbolizes both the end of one era and the start of another—one where rebuilding is firmly on track. Fans will be eagerly watching how the upcoming trade deadline shapes the future of their team and whether Davidson can capitalize on the interest surrounding some of their other players to bolster the team's prospect pool. While the Blackhawks are embracing their challenges, the Panthers, with the addition of Jones, are looking to solidify their position as title contenders once more.
