Biden Jokes About Rescuing Stranded Astronauts On APEC Stage

During the APEC summit, President Biden humorously suggested he might travel to space to save astronauts stuck on the ISS

At the recent APEC economic summit held in Lima, Peru, President Joe Biden brought his trademark humor to the forefront with a whimsical remark about possibly heading to space to save two astronauts currently stranded aboard the International Space Station (ISS). This light-hearted joke, delivered during his meeting with Peruvian President Dina Boluarte, delighted attendees and highlighted the enduring challenges of modern space missions.

The backdrop to Biden's quip centers on astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore, who have been stuck on the ISS since June due to complications with Boeing's Starliner spacecraft. Originally intended for just eight days, their mission has unexpectedly stretched for almost seven months, pushing their scheduled return to Earth to February 2025.

Spotting NASA Administrator Bill Nelson among the audience, Biden jested about how his wife often threatens to send him to space whenever he gets out of line. "Every time my wife thinks I’m getting out of hand, she says, ‘I’m going to call [Nelson] and have him send you to space,’" Biden joked, adding, "And I’m a little concerned he may want to send me to space because we got to get some folks back home!"

President Boluarte responded with polite laughter to Biden's humor, showcasing how the light tone can ease discussions around serious topics like space missions. Williams and Wilmore's extended stay on the ISS has raised various concerns, particularly related to their health and safety as they await their much-anticipated return trip.

Problems associated with the ISS during the time of the stranded astronauts have attracted attention, including leaks from Russian-controlled modules and potential impacts on their living conditions. Bob Cabana, former NASA astronaut and current NASA official, has expressed concerns about the structural integrity of these modules, noting the need for continued monitoring and repairs. Fortunately, the Russian team involved has reassured stakeholders, stating they believe it is unlikely the leaks will result in catastrophic failures.

Particularly attention-grabbing have been the rumors surrounding Williams’s health, with social media posts and photographs sparking speculation about her well-being. After her appearance seemed to indicate weight loss, Williams addressed the concerns directly. She clarified through a NASA video interview, stating, "I think my body has changed a little bit, but I weigh the same. There are a lot of changes going on here... No, I am actually right at the same amount..." Her statements aimed to quell any fears, providing insight to the public about the physical challenges astronauts face during lengthy missions.

Biden’s remarks were not only entertaining but also served to underline the significance of international collaborations in space exploration. During the same APEC session, Biden commended Peru's recent signing of the Artemis Accords—a set of agreements aimed at providing guidelines for activities on the Moon and beyond, involving multiple nations and organizations.

The outgoing president's humor, coupled with some serious subject matter, demonstrated how such events are an opportunity for leaders to connect on various levels. While Biden has kept his stay at the summit relatively low profile, preferring moments of private discussions over press conferences, his comments resonate everywhere, emphasizing the United States' commitment to space exploration and international cooperation.

This situation is reflective of Biden’s overall approach during the summit. While he engaged lightly with humor about going to space, he also tackled substantive discussions concerning pressing global issues, including conflicts around the world. The gravity of international relations loomed large, with leaders from nations affected by various strife, continuing their dialogues during the summit. With China’s President Xi Jinping stepping away from the spotlight of the event, Biden’s focus on collaboration could hold more weight and significance moving forward.

After being delayed for months, the start of Williams and Wilmore's return trip is eagerly anticipated. Elon Musk’s SpaceX, having successfully launched its Crew Dragon capsule during the summer, is set to play the key role of bringing the two astronauts back home during its next scheduled mission. The interplay between space exploration and global leadership discussions continues to engage both audiences and scientists worldwide.

While reminiscing about their amusing escapade, the broader essence captured through Biden’s jokes of space travel provides both levity and reflection on the real-time challenges astronauts face, all set against the backdrop of international summits and pressing global dialogues. How apt it is to remind everyone, albeit humorously, of the compassion humans share, whether it's through literal journeys to the stars or international endeavors. Amidst the chaos of world politics and extended missions beyond Earth, laughter can sometimes be the best launchpad for serious conversations.
