Biden Awards 2025 Presidential Medal Of Freedom

Among the honorees are Hillary Clinton, Lionel Messi, and Michael J. Fox, recognized for their impactful contributions to society.

On January 4, 2025, President Joe Biden honored 19 extraordinary individuals with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian accolade bestowed by the United States. Among the recipients were former United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, actor Michael J. Fox, international soccer star Lionel Messi, conservationist Jane Goodall, and humanitarian chef José Andrés, who were recognized for their significant contributions to society.

The Medal of Freedom is presented to those who have made exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States and world peace. This year’s ceremony, held at the White House, stands out not only for its impressive list of honorees but also as one of Biden’s final official acts before departing office on January 20, when President-elect Donald Trump is inaugurated.

Clinton, who has dedicated over five decades to public service, received accolades as Biden remarked on her impactful career spanning her roles as First Lady, U.S. Senator, Secretary of State, and as the first woman to be nominated for president by a major U.S. political party. Currently serving as a professor of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA), she co-teaches the course “Inside the Situation Room.” During the ceremony, Clinton received a standing ovation from the crowd, which reflected her longstanding support for Biden, including his candidacy for re-election.

Meanwhile, Michael J. Fox, famed for his roles in “Back to the Future” and “Family Ties,” was observed walking to receive his medal, showcasing his resilience as he lives with Parkinson’s disease. Biden praised Fox, stating, “The courage you show every day inspires us all.” The actor expressed humility and gratitude, noting how he hoped to inspire others facing similar challenges.

Another notable recipient, Lionel Messi, who was unable to attend the event due to scheduling conflicts, expressed his deep honor through the White House. Despite his absence, his achievements, both on the field and off, through his philanthropic efforts—particularly with the Leo Messi Foundation supporting children’s healthcare and education—were duly acknowledged. Messi conveyed through his representative, “It’s a true privilege to receive this recognition and I look forward to connecting soon.”

Chef José Andrés, recognized for his humanitarian work through the World Central Kitchen and his efforts to provide food relief to conflict zones, showed immense emotion during the ceremony. Speaking earnestly, Andrés stated, “It’s more about the people we serve than about us. It’s about feeding those who are hungry, especially during crises.” His commitment has brought attention to the plight of people affected by disasters globally.

Other distinguished recipients included conservationist Jane Goodall, known for her groundbreaking work with primates, singer Bono, and fashion designer Ralph Lauren, along with several others, including philanthropist David Rubenstein and LGBT activist Tim Gill. Posthumous awards were bestowed upon historic figures like civil rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer, whose battles for equality continue to resonate today.

The event culminated as Biden reflected on the contributions of each recipient, describing them as “truly extraordinary people” whose efforts have significantly influenced American culture and values. “This Medal signifies more than just recognition; it is about our nation’s core principles and the individuals who embody them,” Biden stated.

This ceremony was not only symbolic of honor but also of the unity and commitment to service embodied by its recipients. The National Medal of Freedom holds great prestige, representing the nation’s gratitude to those who strive for progress, compassion, and change, and continues to inspire future generations.
