Bergamo's Mezza Quaresima Parade Postponed To March 30

The beloved annual celebration will feature colorful floats and strict traffic regulations in the city.

The heart of Bergamo will come alive for the annual Mezza Quaresima parade, a beloved tradition that attracts thousands from both near and far. Initially set to take place on March 23, 2025, the parade has been postponed to March 30, 2025, due to unfavorable weather forecasts. This vibrant celebration features a spectacular array of floats, creative masks, and folkloric groups, captivating audiences with its colorful displays and lively atmosphere.

The event, which is organized by the Ducato di Piazza Pontida and showcases both local and international participants, is more than just a parade; it's a cultural phenomenon. Starting from piazzale Marconi, the procession will traverse through various streets in the city, ensuring a fun and festive experience for attendees of all ages.

Despite the postponement, the anticipation for the parade remains high. "Le limitazioni al traffico in città saranno istituiti i seguenti provvedimenti viabilistici domenica 23 marzo… in caso di maltempo la sfilata sarà posticipata a domenica 30 marzo," stressed the Comune di Bergamo in an official ordinance. With this announcement, the local government has confirmed that all traffic regulations initially set for March 23 will be maintained for the new date.

On March 30, from 00:01 to 19:00, extensive traffic restrictions will affect various thoroughfares in Bergamo, including piazzale Marconi, via Bono, and viale Papa Giovanni XXIII. The restrictions include parking bans and road narrowing in several key locations to ensure the smooth running of the parade and the safety of participants and spectators alike. Attendees are strongly encouraged to utilize public transport or travel on foot to avoid congestion.

Parking bans will also extend from 11:00 to 19:00 on streets like via Zambonate, via San Lazzaro, and via Moroni. This approach aims to facilitate the flow of traffic while accommodating the influx of parade-goers eagerly waiting to participate in the festivities.

The parade promises not only floats and masks but a complete cultural package, including music, dance performances, contests, and exhibitions. Moreover, the tradition of burning the old woman, a ritual steeped in local lore, adds a unique touch to the events. This ritual signifies the community's closing of a chapter as they welcome another year.

As the new date approaches, the spirit of the Mezza Quaresima parade is still palpable. The Ducato di Piazza Pontida is working diligently to ensure the event will be an unforgettable experience. With hopes for clear skies and vibrant displays, the community eagerly awaits this cherished celebration.

Ultimately, the Mezza Quaresima parade is a highlight in Bergamo’s social calendar, a moment when friends and family come together to celebrate their culture and unity amid the beautiful scenery of their city. The postponed event is backed by city officials with promises of a safe and organized festive atmosphere.

As preparations ramp up, remember to check local news and traffic updates, as the situation may evolve leading up to the event. With extensive public participation expected, the day will surely be filled with joy and excitement as Bergamo embraces its rich cultural heritage.
