Denise Filiatrault, a prominent figure in Quebec's theatre scene, is set to step down as the artistic director of the Théâtre du Rideau Vert after an impressive 21-year tenure. Her successor, Benoit McGinnis, will take the helm on August 4, 2025, ushering in a new era for the iconic institution founded in 1948.
At 93 years old, Filiatrault has been a cornerstone of the theatre, shaping its artistic direction and contributing to its legacy. Her departure marks a significant transition, as the theatre prepares to welcome McGinnis, a 47-year-old actor and singer who has garnered respect and admiration in Quebec.
In a statement released on May 8, 2025, McGinnis expressed his excitement about the new role. "I accept this role with humility, enthusiasm, and a deep respect for this iconic institution. I am committed to making inclusive choices. My vision for the Théâtre du Rideau Vert is that of a lively place, where each performance becomes an invitation to discover oneself and others, and where the stories told form a rich and profoundly human collective narrative. I believe this theatre must continue to fulfill its mission by presenting accessible and popular works while remaining relevant to our contemporary society," he said.
McGinnis, known for his performances in various television series and theatre productions, has made a name for himself as a versatile performer. He recently showcased his vocal talent on the show Zénith, where he surprised audiences with his renditions, reaching the finals of the competition hosted by Véronique Cloutier in April 2023.
As he prepares to take on the artistic director role, McGinnis aims to bring a fresh perspective to the theatre. "People have been writing to congratulate me and express their surprise, but I've wanted this for a long time," he shared with Agence QMI. "I've had so many great roles in theatre, and I’ve been contemplating how to move forward, and the artistic direction interests me. Leading teams and bringing people together is something I look forward to." This sentiment reflects a broader trend in Quebec's theatre scene, where a generational shift is underway, with younger directors stepping into leadership roles.
McGinnis will be the fourth artistic director in the theatre's 77-year history, following in the footsteps of notable predecessors. He intends to ensure the institution remains a vital part of the community while also making his mark. "I want to talk about things that resonate today, but how we will do it, and with whom we will do it, is crucial. It's about engaging with people who inspire me and proposing shows as much as receiving proposals. This has been on my mind for months," he explained.
Looking ahead, McGinnis will sign his first program for the 2026-2027 season, while the current season's programming has already been crafted by Filiatrault. His commitment to the theatre is clear, as he emphasizes that he does not intend to isolate himself from other artistic endeavors. "I’m not going into a cloister! (Laughs.) I really want to continue working as an actor. It's super important because that’s how I nourish myself. I’ve always done many things," he stated.
The anticipation surrounding McGinnis's appointment is palpable, with the theatre's board expressing confidence in his ability to invigorate the institution while respecting its rich history. Sylvie Cordeau, chair of the board, remarked, "We are convinced that he will bring a new momentum to the Rideau Vert while honoring its history and foundations. His sensitive perspective, artistic intelligence, and ability to gather talents around impactful projects are invaluable assets for our institution."
As McGinnis prepares to step into this significant role, he acknowledges the importance of collaboration within the theatre community. "I’m part of a generation that enjoys working together; not in silos. However, I believe each company has its own color, and we must distinguish ourselves from each other," he said.
In the meantime, the process of finding a successor for the general manager position, currently held by Céline Marcotte, is ongoing. The deadline for applications is set for May 30, 2025, as the theatre continues to navigate this pivotal moment in its history.
McGinnis’s journey in the theatre began after graduating from the National Theatre School in 2001. Since then, he has appeared in nearly 40 plays and has received three Gascon-Roux awards for his performances. His notable roles include Néron, Hamlet, and Caligula, showcasing his range as a performer.
In addition to his work at the Rideau Vert, McGinnis will also star in Quichotte at the TNM in the spring of 2026, demonstrating his commitment to both his new role and his acting career. This balance reflects his dedication to the arts and his desire to remain actively engaged in various projects.
As the Théâtre du Rideau Vert prepares for this transition, the community looks forward to seeing how McGinnis will shape the future of this beloved institution. With a vision that embraces contemporary themes and a commitment to accessibility, he aims to carry on the legacy of Filiatrault while also forging his own path in the theatre world.
