The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a Yellow Alert for Bengaluru as the rain is forecasted to continue throughout the week. According to reports, temperatures during this period are expected to fluctuate between 20 and 30 degrees Celsius. The IMD has warned residents to prepare for even more rainfall along with possible thunderstorms.
On October 24, school closures were announced for the Bengaluru Urban district, amid concerns for student safety due to the adverse weather conditions. This is part of broader precautionary measures taken by the local government to mitigate risks associated with flooding.
Minister DK Shivakumar is leading efforts to address the extensive infrastructure challenges exacerbated by the rain. Shivakumar, who heads the newly formed consultative committee aimed at tackling these issues, emphasizes the need for both immediate and long-term solutions. The committee comprises various stakeholders, including industry leaders, to devise strategies for improved management of Bengaluru's drainage and flood response systems.
With rainfall amounts reported between 92mm and 157mm due to recent cloudbursts, the impact has been widespread. The tech hubs, Electronic City and Whitefield, have seen significant disruption, with traffic snarls and major operational challenges for local businesses. Frustration has mounted among employees stuck for hours trying to navigate the flooded roads.
Some neighborhoods, like Kendriya Vihar Apartments, have been particularly impacted, with residents evacuated as the water levels rise. “We have been told to evacuate, and NDRF boats are stationed here,” said Amruth Kiran, a resident. Residents fear the loss of access to drinking water and electricity for the foreseeable future.
Compounding these challenges, the forecasts predict more rain. The expected weather patterns suggest continued cloud cover with intermittent rain and peak temperatures remaining around 30°C, making recovery efforts arduous.
Unfortunately, the situation escalated to tragic consequences as fatalities were reported from incidents linked to the flooding. With rising water levels, authorities have confirmed the drowning of two children, prompting the state government to announce compensation measures of ₹5 lakh for the victims’ families and ₹10,000 for those whose homes were affected by water ingress.
During the aftermath, Deputy Chief Minister Shivakumar assured affected residents of their safety and the restoration of necessary services. “This unprecedented rainfall has created severe conditions never witnessed before in Yelahanka, and we are committed to restoring normalcy as soon as possible,” he remarked during his site visits.
The state is also taking measures to address the lack of infrastructure, which has historically contributed to these flooding issues. Shivakumar mentioned plans are underway to clear encroachments on stormwater drains and to undertake dredging and cleaning projects to improve drainage capacity. These projects will receive funding from international sources, including the World Bank, aiming to invest ₹1,000 crore to facilitate improvements.
