Beloved Russian Puppeteer Galina Marchenko Dies At 88

Marchenko's iconic voice shaped childhood memories for generations of Russian viewers.

Galina Marchenko, a significant figure in Russian children’s television, has passed away at the age of 88 on March 26, 2025. Her memorable voice brought life to the character Karkusha in the beloved children’s program 'Good Night, Little Ones!' (Спокойной ночи, малыши!) for an incredible 25 years, revealing an inseparable bond that resonated with generations of viewers.

Born on January 16, 1937, in Moscow, Marchenko displayed her talent early on. She graduated from the Shchepkin Higher Theater School in 1959, followed by directing courses at the Shchukin School. Her illustrious career began at the Central Children’s Theater, where she performed until 1972, cultivating her passion for engaging young audiences.

In 1975, Marchenko joined the Central Television network. Mastering the intricate techniques of puppetry, she began voicing various characters in 'Good Night, Little Ones!', including Khryusha, Stepashka, and Mishutka. However, she found her true calling in 1998 when she took over the role of Karkusha after the passing of Gertruda Sufimova. Marchenko’s warmth and compassion transformed Karkusha into a cherished figure in the hearts of children.

The production studio AVM Media, responsible for the program, publicly announced her passing, stating, "The legendary Galina Alexandrovna Marchenko, a dramatic actress and puppeteer, has left us. She was 88 years old. Nearly half a century of her life was devoted to the children’s editorial team and the program 'Good Night, Little Ones!' Now Karkusha, whom Galina Alexandrovna called her great love and the main event of her bright acting life, has lost her second 'mother.'" This heartfelt tribute encapsulated the emotional connection between Marchenko and her beloved character.

The show, which has been airing since 1964, is one of the longest-running children’s programs in Russia and has witnessed different eras of children's entertainment. While many voices and images have changed over the years, Karkusha’s legacy, represented through Marchenko's voice, remains deeply embedded in Russian culture.

Marchenko's contributions to children's television extended beyond voicing puppets. She starred in episodic roles in adaptations of iconic works, including Leo Tolstoy's 'Childhood. Adolescence. Youth' and the film 'The Unknown Soldier' in the 1980s. Her diverse talents continuously contributed to enriching Russian theater and television.

Colleagues and friends expressed their sorrow over her passing, noting that Karkusha has now lost her 'second mother,' as they often regarded their relationship as beyond the professional realm. Marchenko’s work resonated deeply, with many recalling her dedication and the love she offered to her characters and audience alike.

As children's television evolves, the legacy of Galina Marchenko will continue to inspire future generations of performers and audiences. Her commitment to storytelling and the nurturing of young minds will not be forgotten.。
