Beloved Eshé Lodoy Rinpoche Passes Away At 82

His teachings and impact on the Buddhist community resonate widely, leaving behind a legacy of compassion and wisdom.

The Buddhist community is mourning the passing of Rinpoche Bagsha, also known as Eshé Lodoy Rinpoche, who left this world at the age of 82. The news, which has reverberated through the hearts of many, noted he was engaged in deep meditation known as tukdam at the time.

Shadzhin-lama geshe Tenzin Choydak shared his grief, stating, "This is a great loss for the entire Buddhist world. Eshé Lodoy Rinpoche was truly a great teacher, strong practitioner, master of tantra, and connoisseur of Buddhist philosophy." His role within the community was not only one of a teacher but also as someone who dedicated his life to the service of others.

Born in 1943 in Tibet, Eshé Lodoy Rinpoche's extraordinary path began when he was recognized as the fourth incarnation of the Yelo Rinpoche at just three years old. His rigorous training started at the age of six, as he entered the monastery and took his monastic vows by the age of seven. He spent countless hours studying Buddhist philosophy, embodying the teachings he later shared with students around the world.

Throughout his life, he became known for his deep compassion and his commitment to helping all sentient beings. For many years, Rinpoche Bagsha led annual Tantric rituals, drawing followers from various regions who sought his wisdom and teachings. The Datsan reported he began practicing tukdam on February 6, 2025, as practitioners held their breath, hoping for his peaceful transition.

“His bright image will forever remain in our hearts and will serve as a beacon for future generations,” said the Central Spiritual Administration of Buddhists, echoing the loss felt worldwide. His teachings emphasized love and compassion, ideals he exemplified and continued to instill within his followers.

Rinpoche Bagsha’s commitment was evident during his time at the Swayambhunath temple center, where he spent moments engaged deeply with his faith. Geshe Tenzin Choydak remarked on his influence, “For many years, the respected Rinpoche visited our Republic, led annual tantric rituals, and dedicated himself to helping all living beings.” This strong connection serves as testimony to his impact on the people he touched through his teachings.
