On December 20, 2024, the world said goodbye to Brian Hargadon, who passed away unexpectedly at the age of 93. Born on July 12, 1931, in Westmount, Quebec, Brian was the son of the late Michael A. Hargadon and Stella Lawrence. A loving father, he leaves behind Robert, John, and Caroline, and took pride as grandfather to Ivy, Ashley, Christina, Kyle, Alyssa, Cameron, and Kaden. Known as "Uncle B" to many nieces and nephews, he was deeply cherished by family and friends.
After spending his younger years at St. Leo’s Academy, he graduated from Ormstown High School. He moved his family to Ottawa in 1972 alongside his former spouse Roberta. His professional career included significant positions at Retail Credit, the Ontario Ministry of Labour, and the Canadian Human Rights Commission.
Brian was much more than his career; he was an avid cyclist, sailor, golfer, and skier, with deep interests in politics and global travel. His Irish heritage was important to him, and he was actively involved in the Saint Patrick Basilica community and the Ottawa Irish Society. He led what many would describe as "a charmed life, remaining active and independent until his final days." He is survived by his community who will miss him dearly. Family and friends can pay their respects at Saint Patrick Basilica, Ottawa, on January 6, 2025, followed by Mass and burial at Notre-Dame-des-Neiges Cemetery, Montreal.
Just three days later, the community of Buffalo, New York, mourned the loss of Brian Callanan, who died suddenly at the age of 60 on December 23, 2024. Born on April 6, 1964, Brian was the devoted father of Jesse Callanan and Madeleine (Casimir Garrison) Callanan. He was the beloved son of the late Kathleen and Matthew Callanan and had many siblings, including Patricia, Maureen, Kathleen, Kevin, and Colleen. Notably, both Sean and Michael Callanan predeceased him.
Brian's unexpected passing has left family and friends stricken with grief. While the cause of death has not been disclosed, tributes are already pouring in, celebrating his life and the memories he created. Friends and family have communicated their deep sorrow and are planning to hold a celebration of Brian's life at later date.
Spaces where he dedicated his time and affection will surely miss him, including his contributions at the Buffalo Therapeutic Riding Center, where his passion for helping others shone brightly. Those wishing to honor Brian's memory are encouraged to make contributions to its cause.
Both Brian Hargadon and Brian Callanan have left unmistakable legacies within their respective communities. Their ability to forge deep connections with friends and family, their community involvement, and their capacity for compassion will not be forgotten. The memories created through their kindness, humor, and love will resonate within the hearts of all who had the privilege to know them.
While their physical presence is gone, the spirit of both Brians continues through the stories shared and the fond memories cherished by their loved ones. This chapter has closed, but the impact they made has left imprints lasting far beyond their years on this earth.
