Beloved Actor Ney Latorraca Passes Away At 80

His enduring partnership with Edi Botelho exemplified love and dedication across nearly three decades.

Ney Latorraca, a beloved figure of Brazilian theater and television, passed away on December 26 at the age of 80, leaving behind his longtime partner, Edi Botelho. Their relationship, marked by almost three decades of companionship, was not only personal but deeply intertwined professionally.

Latorraca, known for his iconic roles—including the memorable vampire Vlad in the television series Vamp—had been battling prostate cancer since 2019. His struggle culminated in pulmonary sepsis, which led to his untimely demise at his home in Rio de Janeiro, as confirmed by multiple sources.

Born with immense talent, Ney carved his niche across various artistic platforms, including film, television, and theater. He touched many lives through his performances, becoming vibrant representations of complex characters. But it was his relationship with Edi Botelho, who is also recognized as both actor and director, which showcased the softer, more intimate side of the artist.

The couple met in 1995 and soon shared their lives together, celebrating both their artistic endeavors and personal milestones. Despite their extensive time together, both actors chose to maintain discretion about their private lives. Ney described Edi as “a wonderful person, a great companion, friend, and good actor,” highlighting the warmth of their interaction during various interviews, crystallizing their bond with the remark, "Vivo com uma pessoa maravilhosa, um grande companheiro, amigo e bom ator que é o Edi Botelho."

Their professional paths crossed frequently, allowing them to work together on various theatrical productions. Notable among these is the play Entredentes from 2014, written and directed by Gerald Thomas, where Ney and Edi performed together, portraying characters engaged in deep moral and ideological exchanges at the Muro das Lamentações (Western Wall).

Even during challenging times, such as Ney's hospitalization for complications following surgery, Edi remained steadfast by his partner’s side. Ney reflected on this period, expressing his gratitude and recognizing the depth of their relationship. “O Edi virou praticamente um médico, e percebi que temos muito mais do que um caso de amor, estamos unidos para toda a vida,” Ney stated, emphasizing their emotional and supportive foundation.

Their last public appearance was captured in November 2022, where they shared affectionate moments during a family celebration. Their discreet yet affectionate rapport has always been admired among their friends and colleagues. Edi, known affectionately as Didi, is also recognized for his contributions to the stage and television, having participated in series such as Malhação and A Lua Me Disse. His versatility as not only Ney's partner but also as an independent artist continues to broaden his recognition.

Ney and Edi's decision to remain childless also marked their life together. Ney mentioned feeling "satisfied" with not raising children, humorously recalling, “Até cogitei em uma época, mas pensei melhor... vai começar de novo toda essa história de encontrar vaga para criança em pensão...”. While contemplating fatherhood, they opted for their fulfilling bond over the responsibilities of parenting.

Throughout their relationship, the love and support they demonstrated for one another exemplified the strength of partnership. Ney recognized the significance of having Edi as his life companion, often stating the value he found both personally and professionally. “Encontrei há mais de 20 anos uma pessoa genial, que é o Edi Botelho, meu companheiro. A maior qualidade dele é a inteligência...,” Ney declared, shedding light on the mutual admiration they cultivated over the years.

Today, as friends and fans reflect on Ney Latorraca’s legacy, they celebrate not only the remarkable contributions he made to Brazilian performing arts but also the love story shared with Edi Botelho—a true partnership imprinted onto the vibrant fabric of Brazilian culture. Ney's passing is felt deeply across communities, leaving behind cherished memories of laughter, love, and immense talent.
