The anticipation is building for Prime Video's upcoming film Culpa Tuya, set to release on December 27, 2023. This second installment follows the widely popular Culpa Mía, which launched earlier this year and captivated audiences around the globe.
Directed by Domingo González, Culpa Tuya stars Nicole Wallace and Gabriel Guevara reprising their roles as Noah and Nick, respectively. The film's storyline intensifies as Noah embarks on her first semester at university, and Nick begins his new career as a lawyer. Together, they must navigate unforeseen obstacles, including complications from Nick's ex-girlfriend and his mother’s ambiguous intentions.
“When you do well with the first movie, the second often doesn’t do as well, and the third even less,” said González, reflecting on the film industry’s trends. “But here, everyone says the second is even greater than the first, and the third is being touted as the best of all.” He encourages fans with the notion of exceeding expectations set by the inaugural film—showing optimism for the third film, Culpa Nuestra, projected for release in 2025.
The previous film, Culpa Mía, made impressive strides, ranking among the top ten titles on Prime Video worldwide during its opening weekend. Released across 190 countries, it enjoyed exceptional reception, rising to become Amazon's best-performing international original film to date.
“I expected success primarily in Spain and thought it would resonate well in Mexico,” González continued. “What surprised me was the response—from India to Indonesia, even Pakistan and Korea—it was unexpected.” It was this substantial acclaim mixed with the original trilogy's 3 million copies sold and 100 million readings on Wattpad, which paved the way for the film adaptations.
Wallace shared her insights on the power dynamics between Noah and Nick within the film’s narrative. “I believe it flips what everyone assumes. While it appears Noah's vulnerable, she actually controls much of what happens,” she explained. She noted, “This sequel showcases her learning to set boundaries and trusting her instincts—evolving and gaining strength throughout the story.”
This unique character-driven narrative weaves together universal themes of first love and adolescent challenge, as well as the emotional complexity facing today's youth. Wallace emphasized the film’s intention to highlight these themes with added humor and intelligence, noting her dedication to making Noah’s character relatable and strong.
Discussing the production aspects, Wallace quipped about the filming of the high-octane car racing scenes, shedding light on the behind-the-scenes efforts. “It's amusing and challenging because you’re sitting still with LED screens creating the illusion. Often people don’t realize how complicated it is, but it looks great when it’s all put together.”
Culpa Tuya aims to maintain the essence of Mercedes Ron's storytelling, remaining true to her books yet adapting it thoughtfully to meet the expectations of fans. “There were elements fans were not eager to see, so we reworked those parts as we crafted the script,” González noted. “It was difficult, but I think they will be pleased with the final outcome.”
With the global release of Culpa Tuya just around the corner, fans could not be more eager to reconnect with Noah and Nick’s turbulent love story. Each film promises to outpace its predecessor, continuously stepping up the stakes and deepening the narrative complexity.
Expectations are high, and the development team is dedicated to ensuring the story resonates universally with both the original book fans and newcomers alike. With exciting twists, relatable character growth, and beautifully produced storytelling, this film aims to captivate audiences just as its predecessor did.
