Beloved Actor Javed Kodu Passes Away After Long Illness

The veteran comedian's death leaves a significant void in Pakistan's entertainment industry

Renowned Pakistani stage and television actor Javed Kodu, widely recognized for his comedic talent and distinctive short stature, has passed away in the early hours of Sunday, April 13, 2025, after a long battle with illness. His family confirmed that Kodu had been undergoing treatment at the General Hospital and had suffered from multiple health issues, including heart disease and paralysis due to a brain hemorrhage.

Kodu, a household name in Pakistan’s entertainment industry, dedicated more than four decades to making audiences laugh and bringing joy through his performances. He began his acting journey in 1981 with the play Sauday Baaz and went on to star in over 150 productions, including Punjabi and Urdu films, stage dramas, and television shows. Among his most memorable works is the beloved television drama Aashiyana, which continues to be fondly remembered by fans.

His funeral prayers will be held later today at the marquee behind his residence in Singhpura, followed by burial at the Singhpura graveyard. Kodu leaves behind a legacy of laughter, resilience, and heartfelt performances that have touched the hearts of millions.

Born with dwarfism, Kodu faced numerous societal and professional challenges throughout his life. Despite being subjected to mockery and discrimination both off and on stage, he rose above the odds to become one of Pakistan’s most beloved theater personalities. His stage name “Kodu” was affectionately given to him by the legendary comedian Akhtar Hussain Albela, and it became synonymous with his unique charm and comedic brilliance.

During an interview last year, Kodu revealed that he was suffering from several diseases, and he expressed concern about his financial woes, hoping that friends would assist him during difficult times. Tragically, he noted that many of his friends were also struggling due to rising inflation.

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif expressed his grief over Kodu's passing, stating that the late actor's death has created a vacuum in the media industry that may never be filled. The Prime Minister prayed for Kodu’s high ranks in Jannah and extended his condolences to the bereaved family, saying, “His death has created a void in the media industry that may never be filled.”

Kodu’s contributions to Pakistani theater and film are immeasurable, and his passing marks the end of an era for stage comedy. Colleagues and fans alike are mourning the loss of a performer who was not only dedicated to his craft but also beloved by the public. Tributes have poured in from across the country, celebrating his spirit, resilience, and the joy he brought to millions.

He is survived by his son Salman Kodu and another son, Shera, who has followed in his father’s footsteps and is a well-known performer on the comedy show Mazaaq Raat. Kodu’s legacy will continue to inspire future generations of performers, proving that true talent knows no physical bounds.

As the entertainment industry grieves the loss of one of its brightest stars, the impact of Javed Kodu’s work will undoubtedly be felt for many years to come. His ability to connect with audiences through humor and heartfelt performances has left an indelible mark on the hearts of many.
