Beaumont Children Search Intensifies At Castalloy Site

Heavy excavation begins as new insights emerge from key witnesses about the missing children

The search for the remains of the missing Beaumont children has resumed at the former Castalloy factory site located south-west of Adelaide, where excavators have begun digging based on new insights provided by two key figures from the case. Brothers Robin and David Harkin, who were previously hired by former owner Harry Phipps, say they dug what could resemble a grave shortly after the children disappeared on January 26, 1966, from Glenelg Beach.

The investigation has taken on new urgency as the government-owned land, where the dig is currently taking place, is set to be sold to developers. Spearheaded by independent MP Frank Pangallo, the latest excavation will run for one week, allowing for detailed exploration of the site before its transformation.

Pangallo explained, “The brothers were able to pinpoint the position they thought they had dug the hole.” This important information marks a shift from previous attempts to locate the children’s remains in 2013 and 2018. The hope is to clarify any mysteries surrounding the dig and potentially unearth leads as to the fate of the Beaumont siblings.

On January 26, 1966, nine-year-old Jane Beaumont, seven-year-old Arnna, and four-year-old Grant Beaumont vanished without a trace, sparking one of Australia’s most enduring mysteries. The latest excavation at the Castalloy site has been dubbed “far more intensive” than those conducted by police, with heavy machinery brought on-site to shift tons of soil.

Former detective Bill Hayes, who led investigations during the initial search, expressed the necessity of unraveling the reasons behind why Phipps dug the grave-like hole. “We live in hope... we need to know why he dug the hole three days after the children were taken,” Hayes noted. Investigators seek to understand if the hole has any connection to the children’s disappearance.

The story took another twist after Phipps passed away in 2004, after which his son, Haydn Phipps, came forward with explosive allegations. He claimed to have seen three children at his father's house shortly after their disappearance, adding another layer of complexity to the case. Haydn also alleged he endured violent abuse at the hands of his father.

Pangallo remains optimistic about the fresh search. The methodology incorporates the Harkin brothers’ insights, allowing investigators to focus more precisely on potential locations for remains. While previous searches had been thorough, the direction taken now feels renewed with vigor. Testimonies such as those from Hayes provide additional motives for continued digging, as the hope to find closure for the families remains tenacious.

Despite the enthusiasm among some, skepticism lingers. Several parties, including retired officers, have voiced doubts about the chances of finding any remains at the current site. Respected figures believe the excavation may lead to more questions than answers. Hayes, for one, has not lost sight of the emotional toll the investigation places on families, highlighting the need for sensitivity and patience as they navigate through this long-standing mystery.

Since the Beaumont children's disappearance, there have been numerous theories, some solidified over time and others which seem far-fetched. Yet these fresh digs and the continuing pursuit of truth remind those invested of the pain the families continue to endure.

The digging is slated to end on March 1, leaving the future of the investigation hanging. If the current efforts yield no leads, it may feel to many as though the case remains as frozen as time since the iconic January day when three children vanished. The clock is ticking down for this latest search, and with every shovel of dirt moved, hope officially remains—however faint it may be—for the Beaumont family.

For now, the community watches, prayerfully wishing for answers about the Beaumont children—a mystery now marked by heartache, disbelief, and the desperate search for truth.
