Jamie McGrath Signs Pre-Contract With Hibernian FC

Aberdeen midfielder sets to join after injury sidelines him for remainder of season

Jamie McGrath is set to join Hibernian FC following the club's announcement of a pre-contract agreement with the 28-year-old midfielder. After spending nearly two seasons at Aberdeen, McGrath's time with the Dons has come to an end due to his current injury and contractual negotiations failing to meet his expectations.

Aberdeen confirmed on Tuesday their decision not to extend McGrath's contract for four additional years, as requested by the player who has not played since suffering a shoulder injury back in January. "Both Jamie, who will miss the rest of the season through injury, and his representative made it clear he was happy at Pittodrie and was eager to stay, but we were not prepared to offer him a four-year extension," the club stated.

The Republic of Ireland international made his mark at Aberdeen after joining the club last summer, where he proved to be one of their most creative players, netting five goals and registering six assists across 27 appearances this current season.

McGrath first carved out his reputation whilst with St Mirren, where he made significant contributions before his stint with Wigan Athletic, which showed mixed results. His time at Aberdeen saw him flourish, showcasing his talents against top-tier competition, and his consistent performances made him highly sought after when his contract entered its final phase.

Expressing his thoughts on the new signing, Hibernian's head coach David Gray stated, "We’re delighted to have agreed a pre-contract with Jamie. He’s been a stand-out performer in the Scottish Premiership over the last few years. He's a creative player who will add extra quality to our midfield and final third. We all look forward to working with Jamie this summer."

Complementing Gray’s remarks, sporting director Malky Mackay emphasized the focus on not just the player's skills but also their character and professionalism. "Jamie is someone who has been performing at a high level for many years, and we have been working behind the scenes to bring the best possible players to the club," he remarked, highlighting McGrath's appeal as both a player and as an individual.

The announcement was met with varied reactions from the fans of both clubs. Many Aberdeen supporters recognized the club's cautious approach, citing McGrath's injury history and age as valid reasons for not committing to such a lengthy contract for the player, who is nearing 30. "A four-year deal for him is ludicrous," remarked one fan, illustrating the sentiment shared among many who felt the decision was sound.

Conversely, Hibs fans reacted with enthusiasm, welcoming the arrival of McGrath. Some supporters noted the potential for hypocrisy from Aberdeen, pointing to the recent three-year contract awarded to 32-year-old Sivert Nilsen. This juxtaposition drew criticism, with one Hibs supporter questioning the rationale behind not extending McGrath's contract.

Despite the diverging opinions, both clubs maintained respect for McGrath's choice to move on. Aberdeen emphasized their gratitude for the contributions he made during his time at the club, wishing him well as he embarks on this new chapter with Hibernian. "Everyone at Aberdeen respects Jamie’s decision to look elsewhere, thanks him for his time at the club, and wishes him all the best for his future career," their statement concluded.

With McGrath set to start his new adventure with Hibs, all eyes will be on how he adapts and performs coming back from his injury to prove his value on the pitch. The coming summer transfer window promises excitement as he joins his new teammates, bringing experience, determination, and the creative prowess sought after by Hibs as they aim for success.
