The long-awaited 2024 Dutch Allround Speed SkATING Championships concluded this weekend at Thialf ice stadium in Heerenveen, showcasing thrilling performances from both male and female athletes. After two days filled with competition, Beau Snellink emerged as the standout athlete, solidifying his status among the nation’s elite skaters.

The championships kicked off on December 28, 2024, and featured various distances, including the intense 1500 meters, 5000 meters, and the much-anticipated 10000 meters. Early frontrunner Chris Huizinga opened the event on a mixed note, finishing the 500 meters with 37.88 seconds, placing him only 14th. Nonetheless, Huizinga bounced back with an impressive win of the 5000 meters, clocking at 6:08.85, thereby breaking the previous championship record held by Sven Kramer. "Dit was top," he remarked to NOS, reflecting on his victory and the need to perform well on the following day.

Beau Snellink, initially following Huizinga closely, escalated his competitive spirit during the 1500 meters, claiming victory with remarkable timing of 1:46.82. This performance not only earned him the lead but also drew attention for its strategic execution. "Ja dat was mooi hè?" Snellink expressed with enthusiasm, underscoring his relief and joy over his performance. Following his lead, Snellink now had to face Huizinga directly on the last event, the 10000 meters.

Other top contenders involved included Marcel Bosker, who remained competitive throughout the championships, securing third position going for the final distance. Meanwhile, Patrick Roest, who battled health issues leading up to the event, revealed his continued struggle to find his rhythm on the ice. He stated, "De kans is klein dat ik op de 10 kilometer van start ga," indicating his likely withdrawal from the final race due to physical limitations.

The women’s side of the competition saw Joy Beune rise as the champion after showcasing remarkable stamina and competitive spirit. Beune had aggressive races throughout, especially noticeable during her final performance against Antoinette Rijpma-de Jong. The reigning world champion confirmed her title with the finishing achievement of 1:54.69, acknowledging her efforts with notable joy: "Ik moest even kijken of het genoeg was, maar toen zag ik de 1 achter mijn naam staan." Her triumph was met with applause from the crowd as she expressed her gratitude for the support from the local fans, adding to the flair of the competition’s atmosphere.

Alongside joy, Merel Conijn posed as not just the second runner-up but also set personal bests, making her performance noteworthy. She clocked impressive times and competed fiercely against Beune and Rijpma-de Jong, finishing with accolades of her own.

The weekend not only highlighted seasoned athletes battling for the national title but also brought to light the significance of young prospects like Snellink rising rapidly through the ranks. Athletes trained vigorously, intensifying the thrill of competition leading to personal bests and championship records, ensuring the future of Dutch speed skating remains bright. The top three skaters from both the men's and women’s championships will earn spots at the upcoming European Championships set to take place soon.

This event affirmed the rigor and determination behind the sport, as competitors pushed their limits, with every skate making the difference on the rink.

With the NK Allround now concluded, all eyes will be on the European Championships, where these athletes will strive to defend their titles and achieve new milestones on the international stage.
