The Holidays are officially here, and what could be merrier than the return of the Bath Christmas Market? This beloved marketplace kicked off its 2023 season on November 28 and runs until December 15. Marked by the enchanting backdrop of the historic Georgian streets of Bath, the market showcases 230 carefully curated stalls brimming with artisan goods and festive treats, promising to attract locals and tourists alike.
Bath’s Market is not just any Christmas market; it's been recognized as one of the best in the UK. According to consumer watchdog Which?, Bath was crowned the top Christmas market based on visitor feedback collected from over 4,000 people. The appeal lies not just in the market's charm but also its support for local traders and the community.
Kevin Guy, the leader of Bath and North East Somerset Council, highlighted the market’s significance, stating, “It’s not just important to Bath and the local area; it’s one of the greatest markets in Europe and it’s an asset to us all.” Local businesses reap the benefits, with the market contributing tens of millions of pounds to the economy. Interestingly, last year, it was reported to generate around £34.3 million for the community, up from £25 million just three years before.
This year's market is particularly special; 40% of the traders hail from Bath and its surroundings, helping to promote local economy and artisanship. Among these, 80 traders are participating for the very first time, adding diversity to the already vibrant lineup. Community involvement is also evident, with 36 local groups contributing to the festivities — and they're doing it for free.
Families and tourists flood the streets, eager to soak up the atmosphere. A stroll through the market reveals everything from delectable food items, including festive mulled wine and spiced apple juice, to unique handmade gifts—from candles to jewelry. Every year, the market draws crowds who come not just to shop but to enjoy the ambiance created by twinkling lights and seasonal music.
Although visitors have significantly increased over the years (450,000 visitors were reported last year), locals share mixed feelings about the influx. Some residents delight in the festive cheer, enjoying the scene and ambiance, but others express concern over the crowds and disruptions. “Oh, I love it! It brings such vibrancy to the city,” says Bath local Charlie, who proudly relished her shopping spree at the market. On the flip side, Simon, another resident, remarked with caution, “I think it’s lovely, but it annoys quite a few people living here with all the hustle and bustle.”
But for now, the joy of the market overshadows the complaints. Visitors express their delight and satisfaction with how Bath has outshone other markets around the UK. “I’ve been to Germany and to Switzerland for their markets, and frankly, those are rubbish compared to Bath,” Simon continued, echoing the sentiments of many.
The stories behind the stalls reflect the passion and dedication of the traders. For example, Joey from Feast Brothers flaunts his cheese wheel, big enough to prompt smiles and laughter among visitors. It’s no gimmick, he assures; this cheese is popular and sells quickly during high-traffic days. “On Saturdays we can go through two of these,” he added, humorously contemplating the unexpected stamina expected of customers.
Likewise, Graham’s repurposed glass bottles transformed beautifully from the depths of Lincolnshire, casting atmospheric lights throughout the market. His family’s business, Moonlighting, has ventured through other Christmas markets, but Bath’s charm has drawn him back season after season. “This is my first time here, and it’s been lovely so far,” he said with warm enthusiasm. Other traders, like Paul from Cotton & Grey, another local enterprise selling gift candles, share similar experiences of desiring to be part of something special—showing support for their hometown ambiance and market.
And, let’s not overlook the fascinating honey sold by Simon from Noble Bee. Based out of New Forest, he and his family have found their new adventure at the Bath market. “My honey burns clean, and it’s been said to purify the air,” says Simon. “We keep our bees around locations we know and trust, and this is my first time here, and I think Bath is gorgeous!”
And so the heart of the Bath Christmas Market beats on. Despite potential criticisms, many citizens choose to take pride and joy during this festive season, welcoming visitors with open arms and providing local businesses with valuable support. With the market continuing until December 15, the events will only gain momentum through the weeks, prompting even more traders to share their stories and offer visitors exceptional holiday goods. Who could resist the sweet smell of mulled wine and the twinkling glow of fairy lights—especially when there are so many incredible craftsmen and artisans proudly displaying their work? It’s clear the Bath Christmas Market is not only about shopping; it’s about community, tradition, and the lush holiday spirit. Catch it before it wraps up for yet another year!
