Major League Soccer (MLS) teams are making headlines this offseason with significant signings and strategic moves. Atlanta United recently announced the hiring of head coach Ronny Deila from the UAE Pro League, alongside the acquisition of midfielder Mateusz Klich from D.C. United, marking the club's intentions to strengthen their lineup.
On Friday, Atlanta United confirmed both moves, showcasing their ambition as they head toward the upcoming season. Garth Lagerwey, Atlanta United's president and CEO, expressed enthusiasm about welcoming Deila. "We’re thrilled to welcome Ronny as the new head coach of Atlanta United," Lagerwey stated. "He has a proven track record of winning in multiple leagues around the world, including the 2021 MLS Cup with NYCFC, and his knowledge of MLS was key to our search." Deila, aged 49, previously led New York City FC to their first MLS Cup, displaying strong potential for success within Atlanta United.
Deila’s coaching career includes leading Celtic to two league titles and achieving impressive standings with NYCFC and Belgian teams Standard Liege and Club Brugge. While he averaged 1.7 points per game during his NYCFC tenure, he has faced criticism for his coaching style, leading to his dismissal from Brugge before the 2023/24 playoffs.
The addition of Klich adds depth to Atlanta's midfield. Klich, who previously played as a Designated Player for D.C. United, arrives following the exchange of the first-round pick (No. 23) in the 2025 MLS SuperDraft. Although Klich will not hold the Designated Player status with Atlanta, D.C. United retains his financial obligations. Chris Henderson, Chief Soccer Officer and sporting director of Atlanta United, reviewed Klich's significance, saying, "Mateusz is a central midfielder with proven quality both in this league and at the highest levels in Europe... His qualities and leadership will... be a good addition to our midfield." The Polish international came to D.C. United on a free transfer from Leeds United, producing capable performances with two goals and five assists across 31 regular-season games last season.
Meanwhile, Orlando City made waves by finalizing the transfer of Facundo Torres to Brazilian club Palmeiras, reportedly receiving $12 million upfront and $2 million in potential add-ons. This transfer marks the highest fee Orlando City has ever received, surpassing the previous record set when Daryl Dike was sold to West Bromwich Albion for $9 million.
Although the Uruguayan winger was heavily linked to European clubs, he will now be playing for Palmeiras after helping Orlando City reach the Eastern Conference final last season. Torres concluded the previous season with 14 goals and six assists, proving his impact on the field. His market value remained stable, emphasizing the club’s decision to sell at this moment, as continuing to hold onto the player could result in declining value.
“Today I say goodbye to a club... my first experience as a professional away from home. Thank you to the staff, my teammates and all the people who are part of this club for the constant support and trust from the first day,” Torres remarked as he expressed gratitude toward Orlando City.
The dynamics of the MLS transfer market are rapidly shifting. With notable talents moving between clubs, the strategies employed by teams reflect both immediate needs and broader market trends. Gaining players like Klich and Deila could be pivotal for Atlanta United as they look to reclaim their position among the league contenders. For Orlando City, cashing out on Torres not only secures financial backing but also indicates the club's awareness of market trends, as rising stars from South America continue to draw attention across various leagues.
These recent transfers encapsulate the spirit of the offseason as MLS clubs reshape their squads and prepare for the upcoming season, highlighting both risks and opportunities inherent within professional soccer management.
