A man is under arrest after shooting another man during a dispute at a Punta Gorda motel on Christmas Eve.
At approximately 11:00 PM on December 24, 2024, deputies responded to reports of gunfire outside the Jo El Motel located at 11603 Tamiami Trail. Upon arriving, they found the victim—a male—lying on the ground with gunshot wounds to the stomach and torso area. Swift actions were taken to secure the scene.
With assistance from a Punta Gorda Police officer, officers located the alleged shooter, identified as 20-year-old Ilyjah J. Madison, who had remained on the scene. Madison was found with a loaded semiautomatic pistol, police reported.
According to investigators from the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) Major Crimes Unit, Madison had brought a female companion to the motel and waited outside as she met with the victim. The trouble began when the victim discovered Madison was present and confronted him outside after leaving his room.
The situation quickly escalated from verbal sparring to physical confrontation. Witnesses reported the victim entered the vehicle occupied by Madison, leading to a struggle on the ground outside the vehicle. It was during this fight, the suspect fired a single round, hitting the victim.
“Here we are again with another violent and unnecessary incident – and at Christmastime, no less,” Sheriff Bill Prummell expressed after the incident. “I can’t understand how people resort to this behavior instead of talking out their issue or walking away whenthat isn’t possible. Instead, someone is in jail, and someone else is in the hospital fighting for his life. Multiple families are affected, their holidays are ruined, and our community is tired of it all. Let us all pray for peace.”
Madison was cooperative with law enforcement during the investigation. He was arrested on charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and possession of a concealed firearm, noting his age of under 21 years. He is currently being held at the Charlotte County Jail, awaiting legal proceedings.
While authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, the victim's condition remains critically unstable, raising concerns among his loved ones and the broader community.
This incident has prompted discussions about violence and safety, especially during the holiday season—traditionally seen as a time of peace and goodwill. Sheriff Prummell's remarks resonate with many residents, evoking reflections on community values and the rising tensions leading to violent outcomes.
Authorities continue to remind the public to seek peaceful resolutions to disputes and to report any suspicious or concerning behavior to law enforcement to prevent such incidents.
With the festive spirit marred by this shooting, Punta Gorda is left grappling with the unfortunate reminder of the potential for violence and the resulting impact on families and communities even during joyful times.
