Apple Settles Siri Privacy Claims For $95 Million

The tech giant faces allegations of recording user conversations without consent, leading to numerous privacy concerns.

Apple Inc. has reached a significant agreement to pay $95 million as part of an initial settlement related to serious allegations against its virtual assistant, Siri. The proposed class-action lawsuit claims the technology giant infringed on users' privacy rights by unknowingly recording private conversations and sharing these recordings with third parties, including advertisers.

The settlement was presented on Tuesday to the federal court located in Oakland, California, awaiting approval from District Judge Jeffrey White. According to reports, the lawsuit asserted users typically activated Siri inadvertently and were unaware their conversations were being recorded.

Users expressed concerns after noticing targeted advertisements appear following private discussions. For example, two claimants noted their conversations about Air Jordan shoes and Olive Garden restaurants triggered corresponding ads shortly afterward. Another user reported receiving medical advertisements for surgical procedures after privately discussing them with their doctor.

The judge's review of the settlement aligns with the timelines established within the lawsuit, which includes incidents spanning from September 17, 2014, to December 31, 2024. This is relevant because it marks the initiation point of Siri's "Hey Siri" feature, suspected of enabling unapproved recordings.

Should the settlement receive the court's nod, it’s anticipated users who possess Siri-enabled devices, including iPhones and Apple Watches, could receive compensation up to $20 per device. Given the scale of the potential claimant pool, estimated to be tens of millions, total payouts could be substantial.

This settlement is significant, particularly considering it equates to approximately the revenue Apple generates within nine hours. Last year, the company reported net profit reaching $93.74 billion. Even though Apple maintains its denial of wrongdoing, the decision to settle reflects the growing scrutiny tech companies face concerning user privacy issues.

The lawsuit began gaining traction following revelations from the media, including reports highlighting how contractors affiliated with Apple were found to listen to snippets of user interactions with Siri as part of quality control processes. This led the company to issue a rare apology and announce upgrades to the way it manages Siri interactions.

Previously, Apple indicated its commitment to user privacy, emphasizing, "We acknowledge we have not fully lived up to our high standards, and for this, we apologize." Following this, the tech behemoth pledged to revamp its procedures to safeguard user discussions effectively.

Legal experts following the case point out the growing pile of complaints against tech companies worldwide about privacy practices. This sentiment resonates with users increasingly concerned over their data and digital footprints, which have prompted companies to reevaluate their data management approaches.

Under the terms of the proposed settlement, Apple will be required to create a dedicated webpage detailing how users can opt-in to improve Siri and what type of information will be recorded. Importantly, the company must also delete individual voice recordings related to Siri interactions collected before October 2019, which could demonstrate compliance with privacy concerns raised during the lawsuits.

While awaiting the court’s ruling, the legal team representing the plaintiffs may pursue fees estimated to reach $28.5 million, alongside claiming $1.1 million for expenses from the settlement fund. Apple has yet to respond to inquiries from media representatives about additional comments on the settlement.

Introduced with the rollout of the iPhone 4S back in 2011, Siri has been progressively enhanced over the years, integrating more AI capabilities. The company now hints at exciting developments on the horizon as it plans to introduce redesigned Siri functionalities enabled by AI through partnership deals, enhancing user interaction significantly by 2024.

By continuing to evolve and integrate user feedback, Apple may potentially navigate the heated discussions surrounding privacy scrutiny, aiming to regain trust from its user base. This imminent redesign, which hopes to infuse greater empathy and personalization to Siri, complements the settlement announcement and indicates Apple's commitment to addressing consumer concerns.
