Americans Rethink Their Future After Trump’s Re-election

With political unrest driving fears, many wealthy citizens explore options to move abroad

The recent re-election of Donald Trump as President of the United States has opened the floodgates of concern for many Americans, leading them to reassess their future and explore opportunities to move abroad. Just as it did after his first election victory, this political shift is prompting both affluent and average citizens to contemplate life outside the U.S.

There’s quite the buzz among wealth management and immigration professionals, who have already noted significant increases in inquiries about relocating overseas. Reaz Jafri, an attorney at Withers and CEO of advisory firm Dasein, highlighted this trend, stating, “We saw a spike right after Trump’s first win and again during the pandemic due to rising concerns about how elections might affect personal and financial well-being.” Now, it seems, the narrative is continuing.

For many Americans, political and social unrest, along with economic uncertainties, have acted as catalysts for their desires to leave the country. Wealthy individuals and families appear well prepared—with some already considering options numerous months prior to the voting. This phenomenon, sometimes described as “Plan B” emigration efforts, has prompted increased interest from qualified citizens who want to acquire second passports or citizenship.

Sarah Nicklin from Henley & Partners, one of the leading global citizenship firms, remarked, “U.S. nationals now make up the largest portion of our client applications. We expect this surge following the election results to move even more quickly.” Many find comfort knowing they can redirect their lives should conditions at home become intolerable.

When considering destinations, Canada remains the top pick for many U.S. citizens. Although immigration paths to Canada can be competitive and demanding—often requiring applicants to meet specific qualifications—many see the effort as worthwhile. Various jobs and investment routes provide hopeful expatriates viable avenues to settle there.

If Canada feels too distant, look to popular European countries. Nations like Portugal, Spain, Greece, and Italy are attracting attention for their scenic vistas and relaxed lifestyles. The idea of working remotely from quaint cafes overlooking the Mediterranean is compelling enough to attract many Americans who can work from anywhere.

Meanwhile, Mexico has experienced substantial growth as a hub for American expats, with many flocking there during the pandemic. The sunshine, affordable living, and cultural richness seem to resonate with those desiring change. Interestingly, the Mexican government reported a staggering 70% increase in U.S. residency visa applications from 2019 to 2022, primarily attributable to the pandemic-driven search for reprieve from life's stresses.

Not to be left out, Panama and Costa Rica offer their own draws: Panama’s telework visa allows remote workers to reside for up to 18 months, and Costa Rica has introduced digital nomad visas, making it easier for Americans wanting to establish roots and enjoy life outside the U.S.

Several American women seeking independence or simply wanting to embrace new cultures are also joining this wave. The “She Hit Refresh” initiative provides resources and community support for women considering moving abroad, emphasizing the importance of mental health, personal goals, and shared experiences.

One particularly compelling factor driving women abroad is the desire for safety and personal freedom. Women like Dee Segler have cited political upheaval and social justice issues at home as primary motivations for their relocations. Segler, who recently moved from Seattle to the Netherlands as the election loomed, expressed, “I made this change because I felt like my quality of life could be so much more than what I was experiencing back home.” The demand for universal healthcare, lower costs of living, and overall security aligns with many women’s aspirations.

With traditional paths to adulthood seemingly no longer suiting everyone, and the pandemic reshaping minds and movements, perceptions around life choices are shifting significantly. The desire for expansive living accommodations and lifestyle freedoms is palpable among those who are responding to their countries' socio-political climates.

Even those considering moving to Australia and New Zealand, known for their cosmopolitan environments and fresh opportunities, are deliberate when seeking residency. Programs aimed at attracting highly skilled professionals and entrepreneurs mark pathways for individuals wanting to bring their talents to new frontiers.

But it's not just the wealthy who are feeling the pull of foreign lands. A broad swath of the population grapples with political tensions. A significant survey reported over half of American millionaires aiming to leave the U.S. after the election, irrespective of its results. Those numbers climb higher among younger respondents, signaling widespread discontent and population shifts.

Even though some may perceive this increase as alarmist, those engaged with relocation efforts argue it's merely reflective of current societal attitudes. Wealthy American families are particularly sensitive to impending changes driven by electoral results. Political analysts concur the re-election of Trump is stoking fears and, as such, the influx of applications for residency is expected to dominate the immigration narrative for the foreseeable future.

While it’s clear Americans value their citizenship and rights, pressing concerns surrounding security, economy, and lifestyle pave the way toward considering alternative nations. Observers of this trend assert it’s about some Americans charting their destinies amid the chaos of political uncertainty, preparing strategically instead of anxiously as they search for stability.

Closing remarks from financial advisors and immigration specialists reiterate the importance of assessing personal risk and choices. With each presidential term, it seems some Americans reevaluate what is best for their families and their futures abroad. Indeed, the growing reality of immigration reflects the fears but also the hopes of many seeking something kinder, gentler, and more aligned with their values.
