China Reveals Advanced J-35A Fighter At Zhuhai Airshow

The latest stealth fighter highlights China's push for military advancement and potential export opportunities

The Zhuhai Airshow 2024, which runs from November 12 to 17, has quickly become the spotlight for China's military aviation advancements. This year, not only is it showcasing civilian aircraft but also significant military projects, including the much-anticipated J-35A stealth fighter.

On November 5, the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) confirmed the public debut of this advanced aircraft, marking it as China’s second fifth-generation fighter to be unveiled, following the Chengdu J-20. The J-35A is derived from the earlier FC-31 project, which has undergone extensive evolution since its introduction. The aircraft’s design is particularly notable, especially among military analysts who point out its similarities to the American F-35 Lightning II.

The J-35A was developed by Shenyang Aircraft Corporation and is optimized for both naval and land operations, catering primarily to the needs of the PLAAF and potential export clients. While this aircraft is dressed with modern features, its design roots lie deep within the strategic ambitions of the Chinese military, aiming to create competitive forces against Western nations.

According to reports, the airshow's attendees experienced firsthand the capabilities of the J-35A, including its agility and stealth functionalities, which represent China's leap forward in air combat technology. The J-35A was placed alongside its predecessor, the J-31, giving spectators insight not only to the evolution of Chinese military aircraft but also to the advancements being made within the aerospace sector.

Notably, the J-35A was first seen flying operational tests earlier this year, with its initial prototype completing its maiden flight on September 26, 2023. Since then, it has piqued the interest of numerous nations, particularly Egypt and Pakistan, which have expressed intentions to acquire advanced fighters to bolster their airpower.

Despite its external similarities to the F-35—often leading to accusations of copying—defense analysts clarify intrinsic differences. Most prominently, the J-35A employs twin WS-21 engines, unlike the F-35’s single-engine configuration. This distinction suggests not only alterations in performance but also impacts on the overall design and capabilities of both aircraft.

During the airshow, other significant displays included the J-15T, marking the PLA Navy’s inaugural showcase of its carrier-based fighter capabilities at Zhuhai. The J-15T, based on the older J-15, has been enhanced to allow for catapult launches from carriers, hinting at its operational future aboard China’s next-generation aircraft carrier, Fujian.

Military experts worldwide watch the Zhuhai Airshow with growing anticipation, considering it not only a showcase of aerial prowess but also as indicative of the shifting paradigms within global military balances. The advancements seen with the J-35A and other combat aerial machinery demonstrate China's strategic focus on deterrence and competitive capability development on the world stage.

The similarities between the J-35A and Western counterparts spotlight the complex history of intellectual property and technology transfer, particularly considering past incidents of cyber-espionage where sensitive information about American jets was reportedly acquired by Chinese entities.

Nonetheless, amid these controversies, the trend is clear: China is committed to developing its own cutting-edge military capabilities. The Zhuhai Airshow has successfully provided the platform for the J-35A and other aircraft to make their mark, solidifying their roles not only within China's defense strategy but also on the international military export market.

The airshow serves as both a celebration of technological innovations and as a reminder of the militaristic approach many nations are adopting as they navigate complex geopolitical climates. Observers can expect more from this airshow as China demonstrates its aspirations and military commitments through impressive aerial displays.
