Alyssa Thomas Joins Phoenix Mercury After Blockbuster Trade

The five-time All-Star's move signals major changes for Phoenix and Connecticut as they reshape their rosters for the future.

The Phoenix Mercury are making headlines this WNBA offseason, finalizing a blockbuster trade to acquire five-time All-Star forward Alyssa Thomas from the Connecticut Sun. The deal, confirmed by multiple sources including ESPN, will also see Mercury guard Ty Harris head to Connecticut, with the Sun receiving Natasha Cloud, Rebecca Allen, and the No. 12 overall pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft.

Creating quite the buzz, this trade marks the end of Thomas's decade-long tenure with the Sun, where she emerged as one of the franchise's greatest players. A significant factor leading to this trade is Thomas's prior designation as the franchise player by Connecticut, which had exclusive negotiating rights with her as she was about to hit unrestricted free agency. Since the trade operates under sign-and-trade regulations, it will not become official until February 1, aligning with the start of free agency.

Thomas’s impressive resume includes leading the Sun to two WNBA Finals appearances, including the 2022 season, and securing six consecutive semifinal trips. Her prowess on the court is highlighted by her position as the WNBA's all-time leader in triple-doubles, tallying 15 during the regular season alone and adding four more through postseason play. Averaging 10.6 points, 7.9 assists, and 8.4 rebounds, she is also well-regarded for her defensive capabilities, having been named to the All-Defensive Team numerous times.

Although the Sun organization has come under scrutiny due to their facilities, Thomas seemed to finalize her trade to Phoenix partly due to the Mercury's impressive infrastructure—a $100 million practice facility was recently unveiled, enhancing the player experience significantly compared to Connecticut's practice arrangements.

Meanwhile, Natasha Cloud, Rebecca Allen, and the No. 12 draft pick are seen as valuable additions for the Sun. Cloud, known for her defensive skills and floor leadership, joins Marina Mabrey and DiJonai Carrington. Connor's former teammate Allen also brings experience to the roster, having spent time at Connecticut before moving to Phoenix.

The trade also raises questions about the futures of other prominent players on the Sun's roster, particularly DeWanna Bonner, who is Thomas's fiancée and is currently exploring her options as she is set to enter free agency. With Griner’s potential departure to Atlanta also on the horizon, the transformation of the Mercury continues as they adjust their roster for the upcoming season.

This deal, heralding the beginning of significant changes for both franchises, has the Mercury aiming for championship contention, signaling major shifts throughout the WNBA. Phoenix could benefit from Thomas’s leadership and versatility. Not only does her acquisition set the tone for the Mercury’s future, but it also reflects the growing trend of top-tier talent reshaping the league through trades.

While speculations about Griner’s decision loom large, and the fate of veteran Diana Taurasi remains uncertain, the league is heating up as teams jockey for the best positions for the future. This trade, alongside previous blockbusters involving Kelsey Plum and other All-Stars, sets up for what many anticipate will be a thrilling WNBA season.
