AirPods 4 Launches As Apple Expands Wireless Earbud Options

The new models introduce Active Noise Cancellation features to the open-ear design for the first time, targeting comfort and quality.

Apple has launched its highly anticipated AirPods 4, marking the first refresh of its base model wireless earbuds in years. This update introduces two models: one featuring Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) and the standard version, with prices starting at $129 and $179 respectively.

For years, AirPods Pro held the distinct advantage of ANC—noisy environments didn’t stand a chance against those earbuds. But now, the AirPods 4 are here to shake things up. Let us break down how these new players stack up against their Pro counterparts.

Unlike the AirPods Pro, which snugly fit inside the ear canal, AirPods 4 continue the beloved open-ear design. This choice is intentional, appealing to users who prefer comfort without the feeling of something being lodged tightly in their ears. Apple claims to have embedded some of the Pro’s features, making AirPods 4 appealing to long-time enthusiasts.

Active Noise Cancellation Features

The most notable enhancement for AirPods 4 is the introduction of ANC. This means for the first time ever, Apple is offering noise cancellation on its non-in-ear earbuds. Precise performance comparisons haven't yet been conducted, but spec sheets suggest the ANC performance may hover around the capability of the original AirPods Pro. Apple notes, "AirPods Pro can cancel noise about twice as much as the AirPods 4," setting expectations appropriately.

Along with ANC, Apple is marketing other smart features for the AirPods 4, similar to those found on the Pro version. Equipped with the H2 chip, these earbuds are programmed to modulate the noise control technology, allowing for Transparency Mode—where outside noise is let through—and Adaptive Audio, the latter of which adapts to the listeners' surroundings. While the standard AirPods lack any noise cancellation features altogether, they still offer good audio quality.

Charging Cases and Battery Life

When it arrives at battery availability, there are some noticeable differences between the two. The standard AirPods 4 have impressive longevity, boasting five hours of listening time on one charge. The model with ANC slightly dips down to four hours when the feature is active. Given current market standards, this still places them competitively against others.

The AirPods 4 charging case is more straightforward, utilizing USB-C for charging without adding the luxury of wireless charging. On the other hand, the ANC version does support wireless charging via Qi and the Apple Watch charger, which is quite handy. Although AirPods Pro take the cake with the most advanced charging case—complete with MagSafe compatibility— AirPods 4 remain functional with their upgraded versions.

Pricing Overview

Pricing will inevitably play a significant role when consumers decide between the two AirPods options. The AirPods 4 start at $129, with the AirPods 4 featuring ANC climbing to $179. Comparatively, AirPods Pro 2 are listed at $249, though many retailers often have them at lower prices.

For merely $50 more than the basic version of AirPods 4, buyers gain much more functionality and the ANC feature. Therefore, if you're already weighing the options within the AirPods family, it may be worth considering how often you would use those additional features.

What's Missing?

Even the upgraded AirPods 4 models won't include all of the features available on the Pro versions. This includes some newly released capabilities like hearing tests and hearing aid functions, which are expected to roll out later this year exclusively for AirPods Pro users. For those who require these functionalities, it’ll be wise to remain with the Pro lineup.

For casual listeners or those who prioritize comfort without the hassle of silicon tips, the AirPods 4 are quite appealing. They blend some pros with affordability, making them attractive for the average consumer.

Final Thoughts

Through this release, Apple appears to have strategically focused on attracting those who might have hesitated before with its typical ear-tip design. With two price points and the inclusion of ANC on the non-in-ear design, Apple opens its arsenal for customers often anxious about feeling submerged under their sound systems. Already teasing some excitement within its user base, AirPods 4 are likely to resonate well with those craving quality earbuds without the tight fit of their predecessors.
