The ADNOC Abu Dhabi Marathon is gearing up for its sixth edition, set to take place on December 14, 2024, with participation from over 33,000 runners. This impressive turnout includes not only elite international athletes but also numerous local community runners, making it the largest sports gathering on Abu Dhabi's beautiful waterfront.
Organized by the Abu Dhabi Sports Council (ADSC) and ADNOC, the marathon aims to bolster the UAE's reputation on the global sports stage and encourage healthy lifestyles among all residents. The event is more than just a race; it’s part of the UAE's effort to promote fitness and well-being through active participation.
The marathon will kick off at 6:00 am from the ADNOC Headquarters located on Corniche Road. From there, participants will run past some of the city’s most iconic landmarks, including the stunning Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and the historic Al Bateen Palace. The race will conclude at the ADNOC Campus near Baynunah Public Park, creating picturesque routes celebrated for their scenic views.
Adding to the excitement, the marathon will also feature several shorter races. A relay event for both male and female runners will occur alongside the main marathon. The 10 km race is scheduled to start at 6:30 am, followed by a 2.5 km event at 8:45 am, and the 5 km race at 9:30 am. These races are strategically planned to promote healthier living and to engage the community, aligning perfectly with the objectives set by both the Abu Dhabi Sports Council and ADNOC.
Prize money for the marathon exceeds $300,000, reflecting the competitive spirit of the event. Each elite winner, male and female, is expected to take home $50,000. The Wheelchair race will also see prizes worth $3,150 awarded to the top three finishers from both male and female categories. Further, there are cash prizes for top competitors in the 10 km Wheelchair races, demonstrating inclusivity and support for all participants.
To cater to spectators and participants alike, the ADNOC Abu Dhabi Marathon Sports Village will be open from 4:00 am until 2:00 pm, situated behind the ADNOC Tower. This vibrant hub will host sponsor booths, fitness classes, yoga sessions, sports activities, entertainment areas for children, and live musical performances, making it the go-to place for community engagement during the event.
During the press conference held at the Marathon Village, Aref Hamad Al Awani, from ADSC, praised the partnership between the Sports Council and ADNOC, highlighting the marathon as a reflection of core UAE values like happiness and coexistence. Al Awani enthusiastically welcomed the elite athletes viewing this event as not only a sports gathering but also as the embodiment of cultural unity through sport. He recognized the necessity for collaboration, stating, “the marathon is truly indicative of our communal spirit.”
Yaser Saeed Al Mazrouei from ADNOC also spoke at the press conference, expressing his excitement for the upcoming marathon, which promises to be “an extraordinary celebration of community spirit, fitness, and resilience.” He looks forward to welcoming participants and their families, ensuring it will be unforgettable. Al Mazrouei emphasized the event’s dual focus on celebrating athletic prowess and promoting health-focused activities to strengthen bonds among the diverse cultures residing within the UAE.
