1. FC Union Berlin Gathers Thousands For Annual Christmas Carol Singing

A long-standing tradition unites fans and families for festive cheer at Stadion An der Alten Försterei.

On the eve of Christmas Eve, the atmosphere at Stadion An der Alten Försterei becomes magical as approximately 28,500 fans gather to partake in the beloved tradition of the 1. FC Union Berlin Christmas Carol Singing. What initially began as a small gathering of 89 fans back in 2003 has blossomed over the years, transforming from a modest event of comfort and camaraderie to one of the most cherished holiday singing events in Germany.

The story of the Christmas Carol Singing starts on the backdrop of past struggles. After a tough football season, those initial fans met quietly to ease their disappointment with holiday melodies. Today, this gathering not only uplifts spirits but also serves as a community beacon, inviting families and fans of all ages to share the joy of festive music.

The event, featuring traditional songs like "Kling, Glöckchen kling" and "Ihr Kinderlein kommet," is marked by the enchanting glow of thousands of candles illuminating the faces of passionate singers decked out in festive red and white scarves and hats. The true heart of the gathering lies not just in the singing but also the spirit of togetherness it fosters every year.

This year’s event has seen overwhelming interest, with tickets selling out weeks earlier. For those still hoping to attend, the club advises members to check the official resale market. To facilitate the smooth flow of the evening, doors of the stadium will open at 5 PM, with preliminary performances commencing shortly after. The Eisernen Bläser and the Männerchor Eintracht Mahlsdorf will set the stage as they warm up the crowd. At 7 PM, the choir from the Emmy-Noether-Gymnasium will then lead the crowd through the carols, ensuring the spirit of the season captivates everyone present.

To handle the influx of attendees, the club recommends the use of public transport as parking options near the stadium are extremely limited. Tram lines 27, 60, and 67 will be operational, and dedicated shuttle buses will run from Edisonstraße/An der Wuhlheide to the stadium.

Union Berlin’s emphasis on community during the event is palpable. Each guest will receive free candles and songbooks at all direct access points to the stadium. The availability of diverse food and drink options serves to create a festive atmosphere, encouraging attendees to mingle before the caroling begins.

The magic doesn’t just exist within the stadium. For those fans unable to attend, the 22nd edition of the Christmas Carol Singing will be broadcast live on RBB television, allowing them to join the celebrations from their homes. It is advised for viewers to tune in from 8:15 PM onward, as the night of joyous singing is expected to resonate through living rooms across the region.

With its roots deep within the community, the event has carved out its place not only as entertainment but as a powerful expression of solidarity among fans. It's not just football; it's about sharing experiences, memories, and, most significantly, the joy of music.

This heartwarming concert has garnered attention beyond the pitch, symbolizing hope and community engagement during the festive season. Michael Weber, who has participated since its inception, shares, "Singing together here reminds me of why I fell in love with this club."

Christian Arbeit, the stadium announcer, who brings his family to the event each year, adds, "Seeing kids and adults alike holding candles and singing fills my heart with joy. It's what makes our community so special."

The 1. FC Union Berlin Christmas Carol Singing is not merely an event; it’s an experience encapsulating tradition, love for community, and the unifying power of music. It continues to evolve yet always stays deeply rooted in the values it was founded upon.
