Cissy Houston, Grammy-Winning Singer And Whitney Houston's Mother Dies

The renowned gospel singer passed away peacefully at her New Jersey home at the age of 91, leaving behind a rich legacy

Cissy Houston, the beloved gospel singer and matriarch of one of music's most iconic families, has passed away at the age of 91. Known as the mother of Whitney Houston, Cissy died at her home in New Jersey on October 7, surrounded by family. According to her daughter-in-law, Pat Houston, she had been receiving hospice care due to Alzheimer's disease.

Pat Houston expressed her heartbreak upon Cissy's death, stating, “Our hearts are filled with pain and sadness. We lost the matriarch of our family. Mother Cissy has been a strong and towering figure in our lives.” She described Cissy as deeply faithful and caring, emphasizing her commitment to family, ministry, and community. “Her more than seven-decade career in music and entertainment will remain at the forefront of our hearts,” Pat added, reflecting on Cissy's remarkable influence.

The legacy of Cissy Houston spans over 70 years, showcasing her immense contributions to gospel and popular music. Born as Emily Drinkard on September 30, 1933, she hailed from Newark, New Jersey, where her musical talent blossomed at church events, encouraged by her father, Nitcholas Drinkard. Cissy began her career with the Drinkard Four, her family's gospel group, and later formed the celebrated Sweet Inspirations alongside her niece Dionne Warwick and other prominent singers.

During her time with the Sweet Inspirations, Cissy provided backup vocals for renowned artists including Elvis Presley, Aretha Franklin, and Otis Redding. They gained widespread recognition for their work on Van Morrison’s classic 'Brown Eyed Girl' and Jimi Hendrix’s 'Burning of The Midnight Lamp.' Cissy later embarked on a successful solo career, releasing her debut album, 'Presenting Cissy Houston,' in 1970, which featured hits like 'I’ll Be There' and 'Be My Baby.'

Cissy Houston’s impact on the music industry was recognized through multiple accolades, including two Grammy Awards. She won the Grammy for Best Traditional Soul Gospel Album for her works 'Face to Face' and 'He Leadeth Me.' It is evident from her storied career and musical talents how she inspired generations of artists, including her own daughter Whitney Houston, who rose to global stardom.

The mother-daughter dynamic was heartfelt and prominent throughout their lives. Cissy not only supported Whitney during her ascent to fame but also collaborated with her on several projects. Their duet 'I Know Him So Well,' released in 1987, showcased their powerful harmonies and emotional depth. Cissy remained steadfastly present during Whitney’s struggles with addiction, even recounting moments when she would arrive with court deputies to help her daughter seek rehabilitation.

Reflecting on Whitney’s tragic passing in 2012, Cissy openly shared the turmoil and sorrow she felt losing her daughter. Cissy's memoir, 'Remembering Whitney: My Story of Love, Loss and The Night The Music Stopped,' revealed the depths of her anguish following Whitney's death, as well as the love and memories they shared.

Cissy was not just talented but also cherished within her family. Her musical lineage is impressive, as she is aunt to Dionne and Dee Dee Warwick, and cousin of renowned opera singer Leontyne Price. Cissy's marriage to NBA player Gary Garland lasted from 1955 until 1997, and together they shared one son, Gary. She later had three children, including Whitney and Michael. Throughout her life, Cissy Houston was recognized as both the pillar of her family and a torchbearer of gospel music.

Even at 80, Cissy’s passion for music remained vibrant. She performed with Aretha Franklin on The Late Show with David Letterman, reminding her fans of her unmistakable talent and fierce spirit.

Pat Houston’s tender words following her death resonate with many who admired Cissy: “May she rest in peace, alongside her daughter, Whitney, and granddaughter Bobbi Kristina and other cherished family members.” Cissy Houston's legacy as both the mother of Whitney Houston and as a legendary artist herself will certainly echo through the music world for years to come, bridging generations and inspiring future talents.

Cissy Houston's influence on gospel and soul music is undeniable, and as fans around the world mourn the loss of this extraordinary artist, her music and spirit will undoubtedly continue to uplift spirits and inspire.
