Zion Williamson returned to the court on January 7, 2025, after nearly two months on the sidelines, injecting much-needed energy back to the struggling New Orleans Pelicans.
Williamson's highly anticipated return saw him play his first game since suffering a hamstring injury, and fans were treated to the spectacular size and agility they remembered from the forward. The 23-year-old athlete scored 22 points during the game, with six rebounds, four assists, and three steals, showcasing his high-flying dunk capabilities, including breathtaking highlight dunks.
Despite Williamson's performance, including multiple jaw-dropping shots, the Pelicans fell short against the Minnesota Timberwolves, losing 104-97 at Smoothie King Center, which marked the 21st loss for New Orleans out of their last 24 games. The loss dropped their overall record to 7-30, the worst start in the Western Conference.
Fans had awaited Williamson's return for two long months, and excitement filled the arena as he made his first appearance. His breakaway dunk, executed with grace and power, served as both his metaphorical and literal re-entry onto the hardwood. “The dunk was crazy just knowing how long he's been out and to see he could still do it,” remarked teammate Dejounte Murray, adding to the elation surrounding Williamson's comeback.
Williamson's all-around game was also impressive; he surged through the paint and became actively engaged on both defense and offense. His 360-degree dunk not only energized the home crowd but was also pivotal during the second half, as it helped push the Pelicans to briefly lead the game.
Coach Willie Green expressed pride and optimism about Williamson's condition, commenting, “He had a little bit of rust, but that's as good as I've seen him after being out for so long.” Adding to Williamson’s performance were comments about the chemistry developing between him and Murray, who combined to create scoring opportunities. The Pelicans seemed poised for victory early on.
But the night was not completely for New Orleans. The Timberwolves dominated much of the game, thanks largely to Anthony Edwards, who delivered with 32 points and guided Minnesota's offense with confidence and tenacity. Edwards’s performance included seven three-pointers, setting the pace and frustrating the Pelicans' defense. The young star continued showcasing his scoring prowess, including strong performances earlier this season, such as 53 points against the Detroit Pistons.
New Orleans did not let the early lead fade without fight. On numerous occasions, Williamson and the Pelicans fought back, creating close scoring margins through forced turnovers and fast-break opportunities, but time and time again, their efforts fell short. The game spiraled out of reach as the Timberwolves regained momentum, increasing their lead to double digits.
Despite figures indicating improvement with Williamson back on the court, skeptics highlight the Pelicans’ inability to consistently execute under pressure. Zeroing in on their troubled season, they have struggled mightily, as numerous injuries have plagued their roster, including fellow stars Brandon Ingram and C.J. McCollum who have missed significant play time.
Williamson has participated sporadically throughout the season, having played only seven games to date, contributing to wider discussions about his career plagued with injuries since being selected with the number one overall pick of the 2019 NBA Draft.
After the game, Williamson pointed out the importance of regaining consistency stating, “I definitely feel like my legs are already under me.” His presence certainly adds dimension to the Pelicans lineup, but he naturally leaves questions about his health and longevity on the court.
Looking forward, coach Green and the Pelicans need to build around Williamson's strengths to optimize their performance. Continuous assessment of player health will be pivotal for the team, particularly as they try to claw their way back to competitive standings.
With the Pelicans struggling near the bottom of the Western Conference, fans will hope the return of their star forward provides the spark needed to turn around what has been a challenging 2024-25 season.
