Zebra Dies Following Rhino Incident At Colchester Zoo

Visitors and staff reflect on the tragic event as zoo assures focus on animal welfare.

Colchester Zoo has experienced a tragic incident following the death of one of its male zebras, resulting from an encounter with a rhino. This unfortunate event transpired on January 10, 2025, around 2pm GMT at the zoo's mixed species African habitat known as the Kingdom of the Wild.

According to zoo representatives, the zebra died after what they described as "an incident" between the two animals. The zoo's spokesperson stated, "At approximately 2pm today there was an incident... and sadly the zebra has died." They emphasized the rarity of such occurrences, assuring the public, "These sorts of incidents are extremely rare and we will continue to monitor the situation over the next few days." The zoo expressed its devastation over the loss, thanking the community for their continued support during this difficult time.

The Kingdom of the Wild habitat, which opened its doors to visitors in 2001, is home to not only zebras and rhinos but also reticulated giraffes, ostriches, crowned cranes, and greater kudu. The environment is deliberately structured to mimic the natural conditions under which these animals would coexist, providing both educational and viewing opportunities for guests. The zoo has kept rhinos since 1972, showcasing its commitment to animal conservation and education over the decades.

Eyewitness Edward Bull shared his experience, noting, "The attack seemed random and just wrong place at the wrong time." He attended the zoo with his 18-month-old son, witnessing the zebra's tragic end. Bull praised the staff, stating they acted "very quickly to move away any visitors and ensured the zebra was provided the best surroundings." His sentiments mirrored those of other visitors, who noted the professionalism of the keepers during the situation.

Social media users echoed these thoughts, with one commenter recalling, "We were asked to make our way to the exit to clear the area, not having a clue what had happened. Staff were amazing and acted very professionally under such awful circumstances.” Another user expressed sympathy for the staff and animals, stating the environment felt calm due to their adept handling.

Colchester Zoo, proud of its history, recently celebrated its 60th anniversary. This milestone, like the incident, highlighted the importance of the zoo not only as a recreational facility but also as a center for conservation efforts. The zoo continues to have plans for future habitats, aiming to enrich the lives of its inhabitants and provide exciting experiences for visitors.

Given the rarity of incidents like these, the zoo plans to focus its resources on ensuring the welfare of its remaining animals. “At this time we are directing our resources to make sure the rest of the animals in the habitat are settled,” stated the spokesperson. This emphasis on care resonates with the zoo’s mission to prioritize animal well-being.

While the zebra's death is undeniably tragic, the swift response of the staff and the outpouring of support from the community demonstrate the bond between the zoo and its patrons. The zoo has requested patience from the public as it works to restore normalcy for both animals and visitors alike.

Looking forward, the zoo will continue to monitor the situation and the other animals within the enclosure. The staff remain committed to ensuring such incidents remain rare, continuing to educate visitors on the marvels and challenges of wildlife conservation. There’s no denying this event has impacted many, but the efforts of Colchester Zoo and its team stand resolute, promising to provide care and kindness to all its residents.
