A 21-year-old adventurer named Zara Lachlan has embarked on a remarkable expedition, aiming to become the first woman and the youngest person to row solo from mainland Europe to mainland South America. Setting off from Lagos on the Portuguese Algarve, she launched her ambitious record attempt on Sunday morning, determined to traverse approximately 3,600 nautical miles (around 6,668 kilometers) to French Guiana.
Lachlan, who holds a physics degree from Loughborough University, plans to complete her perilous mission within about 90 days. During this arduous endeavor, she anticipates long hours at the oars, often rowing for up to 20 hours each day, all thewhile facing potentially dangerous conditions, including 20-foot waves.
Having never rowed on the ocean before, Lachlan acknowledges the enormity of the challenge. "I'm feeling really strong and well-prepared having worked with some of the best ocean rowing coaches in the world," she stated, recognizing the extreme nature of her undertaking. She has been trained under the guidance of notable coaches including Charlie Pitcher and Lizzie Brown, the latter of whom has formed a close bond with her over the training period.
"While the ocean is a challenging beast, it is also incredibly beautiful, and I'm looking forward to witnessing things like the night sky free from light pollution," Lachlan explained enthusiastically. Yet, her excitement is clouded by the risks involved, noting, "I am mindful of the fact I’m doing something incredibly dangerous. I am likely to lose about a third of my body weight during this trip. The ocean has various potential threats, from orcas to sharks, including 11 different species known to sometimes puncture the hulls of small boats. It’s definitely something to be cautious about!"
Her mother, Claire Lachlan, expressed feelings of anxiety over her daughter's dangerous solo venture. "You are always going to be worried about your children, but rowing an ocean alone takes it to a whole new level. Saying this, we couldn’t be prouder of her. She has worked hard to prepare and possesses the determination and character to navigate whatever challenges arise on her voyage," she remarked.
Lachlan's quest goes beyond personal achievement; she is raising funds for the charity Women in Sport and Team Forces, which work to improve the quality of life for the armed forces community through sports and adventure. This initiative aims to inspire other women to take up physical challenges and embrace fitness. "If I can complete this challenge having never rowed on the ocean, then other women can attempt challenges of their own, even if it’s not another cross-Atlantic row!" she declared.
Throughout this period, Lachlan is prepared to consume around 5,500 kilocalories each day to sustain herself, emphasizing how her dietary choices are carefully aligned with her demanding routine. With supportive messages from family, friends, and sponsors, she feels invigorated to take on the elusive waters of the Atlantic.
Equipped with comprehensive support and technology, Zara Lachlan's attempt to become the youngest and first woman to solo the Atlantic from Europe to South America is being closely monitored through interactive mapping available online. Enthusiastic followers will have the chance to track her progress as she navigates the treacherous waters of the Atlantic.
Reflecting on her commitment, Lachlan is optimistic yet fully aware of the challenges she faces: "I know it's extreme, and certainly, it won't be easy. But I want to show others what they're capable of, and I’m ready to see what this ocean adventure has to teach me and how it will inspire others. I can't wait to experience the thrill of crossing the Atlantic and, hopefully, making history!"
