Zappe Named Backup Quarterback As Browns Adjust Depth Chart

Cleveland Browns reshuffle lineup with Thompson-Robinson starting and Winston sidelined due to injury.

The Cleveland Browns are making notable adjustments to their quarterback roster as they gear up for their Week 16 clash against the Cincinnati Bengals at Paycor Stadium. With playoff hopes dashed, the Browns are taking this opportunity to evaluate their future prospects, resulting in unexpected changes just before kickoff.

Dorian Thompson-Robinson will take the reins as the starting quarterback, marking his first start of the season. This decision follows significant struggles from Jameis Winston, who has unfortunately been nursing a sore shoulder and has thrown nine interceptions across his last four games. Winston, originally thrust back onto center stage after Deshaun Watson's injury, will shift to the role of emergency third-string quarterback for this matchup against the Bengals.

Bailey Zappe, previously on the emergency depth chart, will step up as Thompson-Robinson's backup, bringing excitement and intrigue to his new position. Zappe, who spent time with the New England Patriots and the Kansas City Chiefs, has yet to see the field this season but is seen as having the potential to offer the Browns much-needed support.

Throughout this turbulent season, the Browns' offense has faced substantial hurdles, positioning them 24th overall with 308.6 yards per game. Their rushing attack has been particularly ineffective, ranking 29th with just 92.1 yards per game. Despite these struggles, notable players like tight end David Njoku and wide receiver Jerry Jeudy have emerged as bright spots, providing hope against the Bengals' struggling defense.

The Cincinnati Bengals, currently holding onto playoff aspirations with their 6-8 record, possess one of the top-ranked passing offenses—a significant challenge for the Browns' defense, which stands 14th overall. This matchup holds considerable meaning for both teams, with the Browns focused on roster evaluations and their future strategy.

Interestingly, this game not only gives the Browns insight on their players but puts Zappe's skills under the microscope. "I mean it's obviously a good opportunity, obviously going to help DTR as much as possible with him starting this game," Zappe noted, emphasizing his preparedness to assist the new starter as needed. His transition from third-string to backup also signals the Browns' commitment to exploring every option available for these concluding games of the season.

The decision to bench Winston follows numerous disappointing performances, including his last game against the Kansas City Chiefs, where he was benched after a lackluster outing marred by turnovers. Head coach Kevin Stefanski faced the difficult task of selecting the right quarterback for this key game, which could potentially influence the team's future direction.

After previously playing through his shoulder injury, Winston found himself listed as questionable, leading to this acute shift just before game time. Although the extent of Winston's injury remains hazy, his status as the emergency quarterback reflects some cautious optimism for his eventual return to the starting role. Nevertheless, the coaching staff is not ready to guarantee his future as starting quarterback even if he regains health, showcasing the uncertainty surrounding the team moving forward.

This week will mark the second encounter of this season between the Browns and Bengals, adding another layer of intensity to the rivalry. During their first matchup, Thompson-Robinson stepped in for the injured Watson, showcasing his potential even amid defeat. Now, he has the chance to redefine his role with the confidence of starting the game.

Overall, these last few games are more than just routine matchups; they represent opportunities for the Browns to discover who can contribute moving forward. With their record standing at 3-11, they are at risk of cementing one of the worst outcomes in franchise history. Underperforming playmakers like Winston played pivotal roles during the Browns' brief surge earlier this season, but both players and coaches are now focused on identifying talent for future success.

With their final three games against formidable opponents, including the Dolphins and Ravens, every decision and performance becomes more consequential. The Browns are banking on Zappe to perform admirably should he be called upon, possibly reshaping perceptions around his ability to lead when it matters most. How Thompson-Robinson handles the start will also dictate the final outcomes of this challenging season.
