Zamora Hosts Thrilling Provincial Chess Championship

Young chess players shine at the age-group championship held at 'La Fábula de la Quimera'

The Provincial Age Championship celebrated on December 14 at the popular bar "La Fábula de la Quimera" showcased young chess talent from the Zamora region. Organized by the Club Deportivo Ajedrez Zamora and the Zamorano Chess Delegation, and sponsored by the Caja Rural, Diputación, Ayuntamiento, Tecozam, and Bar Príncipe, the event attracted nearly thirty young chess players eager to compete.

This year's championship consisted of six rounds, each lasting five minutes with an additional five seconds increment per move, ensuring fast-paced and exciting matches. Local participants displayed impressive skills, leading to thrilling chess battles as they vied for the top prizes.

Reflecting on the significance of the championship, the participants echoed the excitement felt within the community. "Es increíble que en Zamora se haya podido disputar un torneo de este tipo para poder asignar un campeón de Zamora de todas las categorías: prebenjamin, benjamín, alevín, infantil, cadete y juvenil" (Translation: "It is incredible how such a tournament could be held in Zamora to assign champions across all categories: prebenjamin, benjamín, alevín, infantil, cadete, and juvenil.") This sentiment captures the essence of youth sports development, marking the event as not only competitive but also integral to fostering chess culture among younger generations.

The championship yielded champions across various age brackets, showcasing the depth of talent. David Campano claimed victory among the sub18 competitors, with Oscar Sánchez taking home the title for the sub16 category. Diego Campano was crowned champion of the sub14, Lucas Gutiérrez clinched the sub12 title, Luke Fernández won for sub10, and young Luka Marcos emerged victorious among the sub8 participants.
