Yuzuka Rei Shines In New Troupe Production Post-Retirement

The former Takarazuka star takes on new roles as excitement builds for the team's 45th celebration.

Yuzuka Rei, the former top star of the Takarazuka Revue, recently made headlines as she led the production announcement for the "Troupe☆New Sensation Line 45th Anniversary Performance First Summer Performance 'Kageki [Mystery] Retrospective Crimson Demon Tale'" scheduled for the summer of 2025. This event signifies not just the celebration of the Troupe's 45th anniversary but also marks Yuzuka's first stage performance following her retirement from Takarazuka, which officially took place in May 2024.

During the announcement, Yuzuka expressed her excitement, stating, "When my appearance was decided, I was excited and very happy.” Nine months have passed since her Takarazuka graduation, and she noted how refreshing it felt to collaborate with both male and female co-stars during the initial reading of the script, remarking, “the reading session...was fresh and stimulating.”

Joining Yuzuka were co-stars Kazuna Souchi and Hiroki Suzuki, who spoke about their roles and experiences with New Sensation Line. Kazuna commented on his participation, saying, "I will be a demon instead of a person for the first time in 4 years," referring to his earlier role as the fox spirit (kitsune) in the 2021 production of "Kitsune Haku Meikyu.” His anticipation is palpable as he looks forward to the new visual dimensions he can bring to the character.

Suzuki, who returned to the stage after seven years, shared his thrill for this opportunity, stating, "Congratulations on the troupe's 45th anniversary. I want to make a good start for the next 50th anniversary." His words reflect both optimism and dedication to contributing positively to this milestone production.

Adding to the lively atmosphere, Yuzuka and Suzuki will portray the roles of husband and wife. Their interaction during the event showcased their chemistry, with Yuzuka humorously admitting, "I'm still awkward," after being prompted about their on-stage relationship. Suzuki mentioned his surprise during the initial reading, admitting, “I regretted not having memorized my lines more thoroughly,” indicating his respect for Yuzuka's preparedness.

The aspiration of both actors to contribute to the production's success went beyond performances. Discussing how to carry the charm of their character roles, Suzuki joked about preparing lunch during the two-show days, saying, "Since there are 2 performances a day, I wonder if I should prepare lunch for 1 day's worth. Please think everyone is okay there. I will prepare delicious rice!"

Yuzuka echoed Suzuki’s sentiments, saying, "I’m floating on the same thing. Please let me provide delicious snacks, so please leave it to me!” Their commitment to not just acting but to creating enjoyable experiences for the whole cast resonates well with fans and indicates their camaraderie.

The upcoming production aims to present a compelling narrative interwoven with elements of Japanese folklore, focusing on demons and the world of beings beyond human experience. This unique storytelling approach—celebrated through singing, dancing, and various performance art—promises to captivate audiences and contribute to the rich tradition of modern Japanese theater.

This production excitedly marks not only the continuation of Troupe☆New Sensation Line’s legacy but also highlights the unique contributions of its talented actors, especially Yuzuka Rei, as they explore themes of myth and humanity. Anticipation builds as fans await what promises to be fresh and innovative theater experiences. Stay tuned for what this celebrated troupe will bring as they step forward to their 50th anniversary milestone!
