Yuzu Releases New Opening Theme For Pocket Monsters

The renowned J-Pop duo returns to anime with 'GET BACK,' debuting on April 11.

In a celebrated collaboration, the renowned Japanese duo Yuzu has been named the artist behind the new opening theme for the beloved television anime series, 'Pocket Monsters.' The song, titled 'GET BACK,' is poised to make its debut with the new chapter, 'Mega Voltage,' which is set to air on April 11, 2025. After a seven-year hiatus from creating anime theme songs, Yuzu's renewed partnership with the franchise comes at a moment steeped in excitement for fans.

Yuzu's Preferred Concept

In crafting 'GET BACK,' band member Kitagawa Yuujin emphasized themes of recovery and nostalgia, stating that the title encapsulates sentiments of “taking back the lost future” and “returning to our starting point.” Working alongside music producer TeddyLoid, known for his work on previous hit songs by Yuzu, the duo has blended traditional anime song structures with contemporary Japanese cultural elements.

“It’s an honor to contribute to such a time-honored series that has captivated audiences of all ages since its inception in 1997,” shared Kitagawa. Their collaboration feels significant as both Yuzu and 'Pocket Monsters' debuted in the same year, fostering an innate connection between the two entities.

Song Construction and Power of Nostalgia

The complex song structure, likened to a suite, invites listeners into an immersed musical experience, capturing the energetic chemistry between Yuzu and the Pokémon universe. “We have infused our new sound with a variety of elements that pay homage to classic anime music while embracing today's trends,” Yuujin explained.

The lyrics of 'GET BACK' were co-written by Kitagawa Yuujin and his bandmate Iwazawa Atsushi, marking their first collaborative lyrical effort in nearly five years. Both expressed sentiments reflecting on personal goals and dreams, resonating through vibrant and hopeful imagery infused with Pokémon motifs. “I envision the first verse from the perspective of the character Rico and the second verse from Roy’s viewpoint,” disclosed Iwazawa. This dynamic is a testament to how Yuzu's dual-member format enhances their storytelling in music.

Future Adventures Await

'Pocket Monsters' has undergone notable transformations since its initial airing, presenting new characters and storylines. The upcoming 'Mega Voltage' chapter will follow Rico and Roy on fresh adventures with their Pokémon, a narrative leap that continues the franchise's legacy of evolution.

Yuujin remarked on the significance of this ongoing evolution. “For 27 years, this show has meant so much to so many people. To foster that continuity across generations is something I deeply respect.” He mentioned how the series has grown and adapted, mirroring their own artistic journey.

An Artist's Affection for Pokémon

Iwasawa, in a light-hearted moment, reflected on his personal connection to the franchise during its formative years. “My Mascarene can’t level up anymore! Anyone want to trade for an Achamo? I’d love to complete my Pokédex,” he joked, endearing himself further to fans who have shared similar experiences.

Beyond the light-hearted anecdotes, both members of Yuzu hope that 'GET BACK' captures the hearts of Pokémon fans as they usher in this new era of storytelling. The duo has expressed their wish for the song to resonate powerfully, allowing listeners to feel uplifted. “We have poured our love for music and Pokémon into this song, and I hope it brings fans joy as it evolves with them,” said Kitagawa earnestly.

Looking Ahead: From Pokémon to Music

As the launch of 'GET BACK' approaches, excitement builds not only among Yuzu's fans but also within the expansive Pokémon community. With the opening theme set for broadcast in the one-hour special on April 11, viewers can catch a glimpse of the song during previews released on platforms like YouTube.

For many, Yuzu’s latest endeavor signifies a beautiful reunion between nostalgia and modern innovation within the realm of anime music. With this collaboration, audiences can expect to embark on an exhilarating journey alongside Rico, Roy, and Yuzu as they inspire a new generation of Pokémon trainers.

As the anime continues to evolve, so too will the principles that bind artists and their fans together. With anticipation in the air, it’s undeniably clear that this new chapter for both Yuzu and 'Pocket Monsters' represents far more than just a simple theme song.

Stay tuned for the upcoming release, as the nostalgic journey is set to begin anew.
