Yuzaka Rei Debuts As Yoko In Musical Adaptation Of 'The Twelve Kingdoms'

The world premiere of this beloved fantasy series will take place at Tokyo's Nippon Seinenkan Theater this December.

Yuzaka Rei, the former top star of the Takarazuka Revue, is set to star in the world premiere musical adaptation of beloved fantasy series 'The Twelve Kingdoms.' This long-anticipated production will take the stage at Tokyo's Nippon Seinenkan Theater starting December 2025, heralding the first theatrical adaptation of the popular novels by Fuyumi Ono.

The narrative of 'The Twelve Kingdoms' revolves around Yoko Nakajima, a high school girl who is transported to a fantastical world. Yuzaka Rei will portray Yoko after her abduction, reflecting her strength and resilience through trials and transformation, whereas Ririka Kato will depict Yoko's life before her encounter with the alternate reality.

Stepping onto the stage for the first time as Yoko, Yuzaka Rei expressed her enthusiasm: "This thrill of being able to perform Yoko, who grows and changes as she confronts her weaknesses through various hardships, resonates with me deeply."
Yuzaka, who stepped down as the top star from the Takarazuka Flower Troupe on May 26, 2024, feels this role is both exhilarating and challenging as she takes on such a pivotal character.

Ririka Kato, portraying the pre-transport version of Yoko, shared her gratitude for being part of this momentous adaptation. "I am very honored to be able to portray Yoko before she is taken to this alternate world. Engaging with the delicate emotions she encapsulates is something I look forward to greatly," she remarked.

The musical is not only the first adaptation of the series for the theater but also showcases the impressive talents behind the production. The musical is directed by Kazuya Yamada, known for his work on productions like 'Roman Holiday' and 'Dance of the Vampires.' Music and lyrics are crafted by Eriko Fukazawa, adding poignant depth to the storytelling.

'The Twelve Kingdoms' has been loved by readers for over 30 years, with its richly woven narrative captivating audiences across generations. Since the first volume was published, the series has sold over 13 million copies worldwide and has been adapted previously for anime, enhancing its legacy even more.

With shows slated to run from December 2025 at the Nippon Seinenkan Theater, the production will then tour nationwide between January and February 2026, visiting major cities like Fukuoka, Osaka, and Aichi. Anticipation builds as fans eagerly await this unique presentation of a beloved tale.
