Yucatán Faces Temperature Swings Ahead Of Carnival

Chilly mornings and warm afternoons create fluctuated weather patterns as region prepares for festive celebrations.

Yucatán is set to encounter quite the weather rollercoaster this week as cold fronts make their way through the peninsula, marking the transition from the warmer days of previous months to much cooler temperatures. The latest update from the Regional Hydrometeorological Center 'Mérida' indicates fluctuations across the region, especially on February 25, 2025, when maximum temperatures will hover around 28 to 30 degrees Celsius during the day, dropping to lows of 12 to 15 degrees Celsius at night.

According to the report, these changes stem from the prominent arrival of cold air associated with Front Number 28, which is currently influencing the weather system over the Gulf of Mexico. Affected areas will experience partly cloudy skies with potential isolated showers, particularly along the north and east of Yucatán. These conditions are expected to cool local temperatures, which could feel rather nice during the daytime but might throw off residents as they adjust to the contrasting, chilly evenings.

The forecast for February 25 states maximum daytime temperatures reaching up to 28 degrees Celsius but warns of early morning temperatures plunging to as low as 12 degrees Celsius, particularly in the southwest municipalities like Tekax, Tzucacab, and Akil. Meanwhile, areas closer to coastal regions such as Progreso could still experience warmer daytime highs between 25 and 28 degrees Celsius.

"The fresh air mass resulting from the front will interact with warm air from the Gulf, creating weather patterns typical of this season," noted Juan Antonio Palma Solís from Meteored Mexico. His insights predict the likelihood of sporadic light rain but no severe precipitation over the coming days. Residents of Yucatán are advised to prepare for these shifts by dressing warmly, especially during mornings and evenings when temperatures may feel particularly brisk.

The wind conditions forecast shows northwest winds blowing at speeds ranging from 20 to 30 kilometers per hour, with gusts exceeding 40 kilometers per hour reported. This is expected to add to the chill factor, particularly along the coast.

Beyond the immediate weather changes, experts are keeping watch for possible health impacts from the unusual temperature swings, advising people participating in outdoor activities to dress accordingly. The humidity levels are included as part of the expected weather trends, with the humidity reaching up to 90 percent during early mornings, which may exacerbate feelings of cold.

Palma Solís also highlighted the impact on the upcoming Carnival festivities, beginning February 28, noting contrasting weather conditions. While daytime temperatures may feel warm and inviting, reaching highs of 35 degrees Celsius during the festivities, attendees should prepare for chilly evenings where temperatures could drop to between 15 and 20 degrees Celsius.

Overall, the Regional Hydrometeorological Center of Mérida forecasts consistent weather shifts as we approach the end of February, and it is likely these patterns will continue well beyond. This week's cold front serves as another reminder of the variability of Yucatán's climate, where it’s not uncommon to experience summer-like warmth during the day and winter-like chill at night.

Officials from the Yucatán State Civil Protection Coordination (Procivy) recommend staying informed through official channels and taking necessary precautions to prevent health issues related to these changing weather conditions. It’s integral for residents and visitors alike to adapt and prepare as Yucatán transitions through these cooler periods arising from the entrance of new frontal systems.
