Youngest White House Press Secretary Balances Career And Family

Karoline Leavitt’s marriage to Nicholas Riccio and their family journey unfold amid scrutiny and support.

Karoline Leavitt, at just 27 years old, has gained recognition as the youngest White House press secretary in history. Her recent marriage to Nicholas Riccio, who is 59, has sparked discussions due to their significant 32-year age gap. The couple wed in January 2025, shortly before President Donald Trump’s second inauguration, marking a unique chapter in Leavitt’s personal life as well as her burgeoning political career.

Leavitt and Riccio first met in 2022 during her congressional campaign in New Hampshire, where she won the Republican nomination but ultimately lost the seat to Chris Pappas. “A mutual friend of ours hosted an event at a restaurant that he owns up in New Hampshire and invited my husband,” Leavitt recounted on "The Megyn Kelly Show." She fondly reflected on their initial encounter, noting that they became friends before falling in love.

Addressing the concerns about their age difference, Leavitt admitted, “Of course,” when asked if she had any hesitations about dating Riccio. Yet, she quickly affirmed, “I mean it's a very atypical love story but he's incredible.” This statement echoes the experience of many couples that face skepticism about age-gap relationships.

Leavitt has described Riccio as an excellent partner, stating, “He is my greatest supporter, he's my best friend and he's my rock.” She emphasized his successful career in real estate, where he has built a prominent business that supports her ambitions. “He is so supportive, especially during a very chaotic period of life,” she added, referring to the demands of motherhood and her career in the public eye.

The couple welcomed their son, Nicholas Robert Riccio, affectionately nicknamed “Niko,” in July 2024. Following his birth, Leavitt did not take an extensive maternity leave after an assassination attempt on Trump on July 13, pushing her to rapidly re-enter the political fray. “I had just brought my newborn, my three-day-old baby home from the hospital. And I said, ‘I’m going to turn on the television and watch the rally today,” she recalled, illustrating the sudden merging of her roles as both mother and press secretary.

Recently, she shared snapshots from their wedding on Instagram, which took place at Wentworth By The Sea Country Club in New Hampshire. Leavitt donned a long-sleeved white gown adorned with sparkling elements, while Riccio opted for a classic black tuxedo. In her post, she expressed joy about the occasion, stating, “Finally found some time to post a few of my favorite pictures from one of my favorite days!”

The relationship between Leavitt and Riccio has not been without controversy. Observers have pointed out several potential red flags, particularly regarding their significant age difference and differing personalities. Leavitt has noted that Riccio is her “exact opposite,” describing him as an introvert in contrast to her extroverted nature. Some experts suggest that such mismatches in personality can lead to challenges in the relationship, especially if communication is not consistently practiced.

Leavitt has also acknowledged differences in their approaches to social media. While she is open and expressive on these platforms, Riccio prefers to maintain his privacy, leading Leavitt to respect his choices. “He doesn't have social media ... I respect his privacy on here — but he's my number one fan, the best dad, and just the best man I've ever met.” Such divergences in online presence highlight the potential generational gap between them.

Furthermore, as a successful property mogul, Riccio balances the demands of his career while also supporting Leavitt's political pursuits. His job flexibility allows him to accompany her during her travels, nurturing their son while Leavitt fulfills her obligations as press secretary. “Leaving the baby every day to go to work, it does break your heart,” she shared, revealing the emotional toll of her dual role as a mother and public figure.

While many have raised eyebrows at their unconventional relationship, Leavitt continues to emphasize the strength of their partnership. She has expressed her gratitude for the robust support system surrounding them, which includes family and trusted friends who step in when needed.

Despite the scrutiny surrounding their age gap and contrasting life experiences, Leavitt paints a picture of a committed and affectionate family life. “It’s true when they say there’s nothing comparable to the love you feel for your child. My heart has grown bigger than I ever imagined possible,” she conveyed in an earlier Instagram post announcing her son’s birth.

As both Leavitt and Riccio navigate the landscape of their unique relationship, they continue to challenge norms and expectations in love, partnerships, and family life amidst the chaos of modern politics.
