Young Drivers Show Renewed Passion For Cars

Survey reveals Gen Z and Millennials are passionate about driving and owning classic cars

Car enthusiasm may not be dying out as many feared. A recent survey from Hagerty reveals surprising facts about how young people, especially Gen Z and Millennials, feel about cars.

According to the survey, the interest among these young adults for classic and enthusiast vehicles is at odds with stereotypes of their generation being anti-driving. It seems the love for cars remains strong, debunking the myth of their lack of interest.

The report found 77 percent of Gen Z respondents expressed affectionate feelings toward driving. Interestingly, 34 percent of Millennials reported being DIY enthusiasts when it came to repairs.

It’s worth noting, too, the survey noted about one-third of young respondents own or have previously owned classic cars. This reflects the younger generations' growing involvement with the collector car community.

McKeel Hagerty, the CEO and chairman at Hagerty, stated, "The next generation of car enthusiasts is here, creating a vibrant market for us to help enthusiasts protect, buy, sell, and enjoy their special vehicles." This sentiment shows his optimism for car culture’s future.

Despite the focus on video games and social media, Gen Z is not just passively consuming content. They're actively engaging with classic car culture, making steps beyond the screen.

The survey revealed intriguing statistics around how young people learn about classic cars. A notable 39 percent cited YouTube as their go-to resource, with Instagram right behind at 38 percent.

This shift toward digital platforms indicates how car culture is evolving. Young people are now finding out about cars and sharing their passion through videos and social media rather than through traditional means.

Notably, the Mazda Miata from 1990–1998 has emerged as the most commonly insured classic vehicle among Gen Z enthusiasts. It seems this classic ride has bypassed older models to capture their attention.

The survey's findings counter preconceived notions about younger people supposedly avoiding driving altogether. Instead, it's clear they interact with car culture under different terms, blending digital and real-life experiences.

One fascinating insight is how different this generation is from their Baby Boomer parents. While older generations may gravitate toward more iconic models, younger enthusiasts appreciate more accessible and smaller sportscars.

It's not just about brand-new models or luxury cars—the rugged charm of classic automobiles continues to hold appeal. Young people increasingly view classic cars as symbols of freedom, nostalgia, and individual expression.

For the current crop of young drivers, cars mean something more than just A to B transportation. They present opportunities for passion, creativity, and even community building.

Given how car enthusiasts are rallying around shared experiences, it’s easy to picture car shows, meets, and garage gatherings reigniting their bond with automotive history. These social gatherings are becoming critical as they build connections over shared interests.

Another notable point is the increasing diversity within the young car community. More females are expressing interest, inspired by female-led movements and empowerment efforts across various industries.

This growing inclusivity marks a meaningful shift within automotive culture. Young women are sharing their stories, collecting cars, and making strides to show they, too, are enthusiasts.

The car world is diversifying, with more perspectives being heard. This change enriches the car community, bringing forth varied narratives and experiences.

Social media plays no small role, especially allowing enthusiasts to share their journeys and experiences. Platforms like TikTok have become new avenues for creators to express the joys of car ownership.

One emerging trend is themed car-building challenges circulating online. These challenges not only showcase creativity but also encourage bonding among enthusiasts seeking to outdo one another with design and craftsmanship.

For many young people, owning and customizing cars is part of their identities. They are not content with merely owning vehicles; they want to personalize them and create something unique.

Some enthusiasts have made significant efforts to document their modifications online. This has led to valuable exchanges of ideas and encouragement across the community.

Such enthusiasm for engagement highlights the importance of mentorship within the community. More experienced enthusiasts are stepping up to mentor and guide newcomers, ensuring the spirit continues.

Even though challenges like rising prices and market fluctuations persist, the interest remains unwavering. Young enthusiasts have demonstrated resilience, often finding ways to pursue their passion irrespective of external pressures.

A collective reckoning is happening among young car enthusiasts about the future of driving. Many are realizing their connection to automobiles runs deep, and they are willing to stand by their passion.

Classic car shows and meets have taken on new relevance, embodying both nostalgia and the excitement of youth. Young enthusiasts are not only presenting their vehicles; they’re inviting others to experience the joy of car culture.

The way these communities organize events has also adapted. Many are tapping social media for event promotion to reach more diverse audiences and attract passionate attendees.

It's exciting to observe the fresh take younger enthusiasts have on car ownership and culture. With enthusiasm on the rise, the evolution of automotive culture seems to be headed for a bright and dynamic future.

Through all these developments, what remains clear is the love of driving isn’t just alive; it’s thriving among young people. The future looks promising, alive with possibilities and driven by passion.
