Yokozuna Terunofuji Faces Challenges At Early Senshō Tournament

With surprising defeats among top wrestlers, the competition heats up as the tournament progresses.

Day four of the Early Senshō Tournament took place on January 15 at the Ryōgoku Kokugikan, where returning Yokozuna Terunofuji faced off against Shōzakura and experienced his first defeat of the tournament. This loss brought his record to 2 wins and 2 losses, resulting in Shōzakura achieving his third 'kinboshi' (a win against a Yokozuna).

Meanwhile, last tournament's champion, Ozeki Kotozakura, was defeated by Kirishima, marking his record at 1 win and 3 losses, making his promotion to Yokozuna almost impossible after this bout.

Ozeki Hoshoryū, who is also on the path to potentially become the next Yokozuna, managed to push Takakatsu to the mat, continuing his unbeaten streak at 4 wins. Daieisho also faced off against Komusubi Abi but suffered his second defeat of the tournament, bringing his record to 2 wins and 2 losses.

Among the Sekiwake wrestlers, Daieishō experienced his first loss of the tournament, and Wakamotoharu faced his third loss, illustrating the unpredictability of the competition. The only remaining undefeated wrestlers, apart from Hoshoryū, include Wakatakakage, Chiyotairyu, Tamawashi, and Kintamayama, each boasting impressive performances.

On the fifth day of the tournament, which occurred on January 16, Terunofuji withdrew from the tournament due to health concerns, leaving the Ozeki unable to perform. This resulted in chaos within the ranks, as three Ozeki suffered significant defeats.

Hoshoryū faced his first loss against Atami Fuji with a throw maneuver, demonstrating how quickly fortunes can change during the tournament. Meanwhile, Daieisho succumbed to Wakatakakage, also resulting in his third defeat.

Following his loss, Kotozakura faced Shōdai, suffering his fourth consecutive loss, showcasing how challenging the competition can be when the pressure mounts.

With no current undefeated Sekiwake, the only wrestlers maintaining perfect records are Wakatakakage and Kirishima, heightened the excitement as the tournament progresses. Fans can look forward to the next matches, as the battle for the top division intensifies.
