Yokozuna Hokutoryu Leads Championship Charge With Three Wins

The Spring Grand Sumo Tournament showcases fierce competition as wrestlers battle for titles and ranking stability.

The 2025 Spring Grand Sumo Tournament has entered its fourth day, bringing with it thrilling matches and unexpected results. One of the standout performers has been the newly minted Yokozuna Hokutoryu, who has made headlines with his impressive victories. On March 12, 2025, he secured his third consecutive win by defeating the rank-and-file wrestler, Homarefuji, demonstrating remarkable skill and composure.

Hokutoryu's ascent to the rank of Yokozuna, which he achieved following his dominant performance at the previous tournament, has made waves among sumo fans. His recent win places him firmly in contention as he seeks to maintain his undefeated streak. When asked about his performance, Hokutoryu remarked on the importance of staying focused, stating, "I concentrate on my stance and maintain good responses with my body. I'm becoming more fluid and calm with each match."

Meanwhile, the Ozeki Daenosato faced Wakamotoharu, resulting in his first loss of the tournament. His defeat marks a setback as he aims to solidify his rank. After the match, Daenosato calmly reflected, "I need to refocus and concentrate on my techniques again. This is just part of sumo." This result leaves him at 2 wins and 1 loss, entering the next rounds with pressure to perform.

Another highlight was the performance of Ozeki Kiribayama, who triumphed over Takakeisho on the same day, adding another victory to his tally. Kiribayama's tactical approach has been praised, and with this win, he continues to establish himself as one of the top contenders.

Beyond the high ranking competitors, former Ozeki, now competing as West Sandanme 21, Morning Mountain (朝乃山) has also made news. After returning from a severe injury, which included rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament of his left knee, he has bounced back with three straight victories. "I didn’t want to lose, especially not to Zambara," he credited his focus and preparation for these consecutive wins. His last victory against Karyu, the 18-year-old newcomer, showed his experience against the younger generation and solidifies his path back toward the Makuuchi division.

Morning Mountain faced Karyu, acknowledging the youngster's strength, especially after Karyu's impressive performance from the previous tournament. "Today’s opponent was youthful yet tricky. I had to remain alert throughout the match," he shared.

The tournament also saw the seasoned Abi defeating Hoshoryu, which now places Abi at four wins. His focus has shifted significantly following the retirement of former Sekiwake Abusaki last December, and he's eager to lead his training group. "I want to showcase my capabilities and mentor by example," he stated, alluding to the new pressure he feels.

Throughout the tournament, matches have displayed raw talent, as first-time competitors and seasoned wrestlers alike have clashed. The initial days have brought forth surprising results as well as exciting moments. On Day 4, multiple seasoned wrestlers, such as Takakeisho and Ryuden, have also faced strong competition. The continued unpredictability of each bout keeps fans on the edge of their seats.

Outside the highlights, the notorious Ozeki, Kiribayama, continues to navigate the waters of his own expectations. Following his match, Kiribayama emphasized the need for maintaining his strategy, stating, "I am focusing on consistent attacks. If I can stay composed doing what I do best, I can achieve good results." This sentiment speaks to the intense pressure Ozeki must navigate as they all seek to solidify their ranks against fierce new challengers.

The Spring Grand Sumo Tournament is proving to be one of the more thrilling seasons, with battles lined up to capture the audience's excitement. All eyes remain on how Hokutoryu's new title will influence his matches moving forward, as well as how Daenosato will recover from his recent loss.

Fans eagerly await the next rounds knowing every match holds the power to define careers and shift rankings. Each wrestler brings to the mat not just physical strength, but also strategic mastery honed through years of tradition.
