Yokohama Advances With 4-2 Victory Over Municipal Wakayama

In a thrilling first match, young athletes displayed impressive talent and determination on Koshien's hallowed ground.

Yokohama High School triumphed over Municipal Wakayama High School with a score of 4-2 in the opening round of the 97th National High School Baseball Invitational Tournament, showcasing dynamic performances from both teams on March 19, 2025, at Koshien Stadium.

Municipal Wakayama made their return to the tournament for the first time in three years but found themselves on the back foot early in the game. In the first inning, an error on their part allowed Yokohama to score the initial run, setting the tone for what would turn into a challenging match.

Yokohama's ace pitcher, second-year student Oda Shuto, was impressive on the mound, marking a personal best by throwing a blazing 152 km/h fastball. He maintained a strong command of the game through the first three innings, allowing only one hit and demonstrating a mix of power and precision with his pitching. However, in the 5th inning, he surrendered two runs, leaving his team with a slight edge.

The game turned more competitive in the third inning when Municipal Wakayama managed only a single hit up until then. Their breakthrough came when their designated hitter, Habu Motoki, responded valiantly after his teammate was intentionally walked. In a moment that stirred excitement among the fans, Habu managed to connect with a 146 km/h fastball, delivering a timely hit to center field that allowed them to close the gap to 2-4.

Reflecting on the experience, Motoki noted, “I felt that pitch was faster than the 160 km/h batting machine I practiced with during winter. I thought, ‘They took me lightly, and I have to hit this.’ I managed to hit back against it.” His determination to capitalize on the moment showed a glimmer of hope for Municipal Wakayama as they attempted to mount a comeback.

Despite Motoki’s efforts, Municipal Wakayama's starting pitcher, Tsuchii Genjiro, faced difficulties throughout the match. The third-year ace struggled with his control, resulting in three runs scored against him over 2 and 1/3 innings. Despite being replaced by second-year Tanba Haruka, who allowed a timely triple in the fourth inning that brought another run for Yokohama, he steadied his performance and managed to hold firm against further runs from Yokohama after that.

But the struggles were not just on the mound. Municipal Wakayama’s batting lineup faced a formidable challenge against Yokohama’s solid defense, specifically against their ace reliever, Okumura Ryota, who entered the game in the sixth inning and did not allow a single hit thereafter. This left Municipal Wakayama unable to create opportunities for scoring after the fifth inning, extinguishing any remaining hopes of a late-game comeback.

Yokohama further capitalized on their lead in the second inning when Okumura, batting third, hit a significant two-run timely hit with two outs, extending their lead to 3-1. Commenting on his team’s performance, Yokohama's coach expressed satisfaction with how his players executed the game plan effectively. In contrast, Municipal Wakayama’s coach, Handa Shinichi, remarked on the missed opportunities during crucial moments, noting, “I think there were mistakes on the opponent's side, but we struggled to capitalize on our chances.”

With their 4-2 victory, Yokohama advanced to the second round of the tournament, showing their prowess and teamwork. In contrast, Municipal Wakayama, despite their spirited effort, was left to ponder what might have been as they exited the tournament. Their captain, Kawaba Akinobu, who had been in the spotlight earlier for his unique players' oath during the opening ceremony, now faces the disappointment of an early exit following a hard-fought matchup.

The clash offered a showcase of high school baseball excellence and the resilience of young athletes, demonstrating the unpredictable nature of tournament play. Each run scored and defensive stand illustrated the growing tension as fans cheered for their teams, reflecting the heart and soul that this storied tournament generates.

As both teams left the field, the experience served as a backdrop for growth, with young athletes gaining invaluable lessons from their time on this grand stage. Moving forward, the players of Municipal Wakayama will undoubtedly carry the determination they exhibited on the field into their future baseball endeavors.

This match highlighted the thrill and intensity of high school baseball, preserving its place in the hearts of fans and players alike, who know too well that while victory is sweet, the journey itself is what truly enriches their love for the game.

With the tournament continuing, spectators now eagerly await the upcoming matchups, hoping to witness more unforgettable moments on the diamond as aspirations clash and dreams unfold.
