The Institut Royal Météorologique (IRM) has issued a yellow alert for slippery conditions across most Walloon provinces, excluding Brabant wallon. This alert is effective from 6 PM on Monday until 11 AM on Tuesday. The forecast predicts wintry showers on the heights of the Ardenne tonight, with temperatures dipping slightly below zero, particularly south of the Sambre and Meuse valley.
According to IRM, "Tonight, we expect wintry showers on the heights of the Ardenne. Then, temporary periods of clearer skies will develop, during which temperatures may become slightly negative south of the Sambre and Meuse valley. Wet roads from rain or melting snow could become slippery due to the formation of ice patches and/or frost." This warning conveys serious safety concerns for drivers and pedestrians as icy conditions could prevail following the rain and melting snow.
The provinces of Hainaut, Namur, Liège, and Luxembourg are all on alert for these hazardous conditions. It's important to note the exception of Flanders, Brussels, and Brabant wallon, which are not under any warnings at this time.
This isn't the first alert issued recently; IRM had previously warned of icy conditions from Sunday night through Monday afternoon. Monday morning's strong snowfall had already caused difficulties for trucks and other vehicles, particularly in southern regions.
Residents are urged to remain vigilant and exercise caution when traveling, especially during the times of changing weather as conditions can swiftly evolve. With temperatures hovering around freezing and the potential for black ice, the risk remains significant.
Weather forecasts suggest more instability as the season progresses, and with the increased likelihood of wintry precipitation, drivers are advised to check road conditions before heading out. Local authorities are monitoring the situation closely and responding to traffic incidents as they arise.
While temporary clearer conditions may appear, they are deceptive at times, as wet surfaces can freeze quickly, leading to hazardous driving conditions. Therefore, it is always prudent to check with local weather reports and listen for updates from IRM or relevant authorities.
Overall, residents of Walloon provinces should prepare for winter weather challenges appropriately, ensuring vehicles are equipped for icy conditions, and avoid unnecessary travel during peak hazardous periods. Continuous updates should help mitigate the impact of this winter weather on day-to-day activities.
