Yann Arthus-Bertrand Captures Marseillais Diversity Through Portraits

Famed photographer’s project highlights the urban identity of Marseille's residents.

Renowned photographer and filmmaker Yann Arthus-Bertrand is bringing his acclaimed photography project to Marseille, inviting locals to step in front of his camera for free portraits. From December 17 to 20, 2023, the iconic studio is set up on La Canebière, where hundreds of Marseillais can capture their likenesses through the lens of one of the world's leading photographers.

The initiative—a part of Arthus-Bertrand's expansive project titled "Les Français et ceux qui vivent en France"—aims to portray the rich diversity of human experience within the country. Since the project launched earlier this year, the photographer has visited over 50 cities across France, gathering thousands of portraits representing not only locals but them alongside family, friends, and even pets.

Marseille, with its vibrant mix of cultures and identities, is one of the latest stops on this significant photographic tour. The portraits captured here will be included in forthcoming publications by Actes Sud and showcased as part of traveling exhibitions. Despite the positive response from the public, excitement for the event led to all 80 available slots being filled within just one hour of their announcement.

Participants—who came from various backgrounds, including members of sports teams and local associations—were encouraged to wear bright colors and bring symbols representing their work. Each participant receives their best photo digitally via email within five to six weeks following the session.

On the first day of shooting, over 220 women participated, with specific arrangements made to accommodate several local women's associations. This collective effort not only promotes individual stories but also highlights the contributions of women within the community, creating a sense of empowerment.

During the sessions, Arthus-Bertrand created a relaxed atmosphere, guiding participants through the experience with ease. "Il n’y a aucune différence entre les Lillois, les Marseillais, les Corses... La France est un pays très mélangé... tous les gens sont beaux, c’est que l’on essaie de montrer" ("There is no difference between the people from Lille, Marseille, or Corsica... France is a very mixed country... all people are beautiful; that's what we're trying to show"), he stated. His work captures not only faces but the essence of community spirit bounding them together.

Assia, one of the participants from the Marseille Panthers women’s basketball team, expressed her enjoyment of the experience: "C’était du stress mais je suis super contente de l’avoir fait, on montre Marseille au monde entier" ("It was stressful, but I’m super glad I did it; we show Marseille to the whole world"). Such sentiments echoed through the lines of eager participants, all of whom were excited not only about the photographic experience but also the opportunity it presented to represent their city.

The atmosphere was filled with energy as participants, who formed the majority of walk-ins and appointments, shared their stories before and after their photos. Many noted how this project creates connection and acknowledges the diverse contributions within their community. Another participant, assaying with her group, shared, "Franchement, ça fait un très beau résultat" ("Honestly, it produces very good results"), gracefully waiting her turn for her close-up.

A prominent space had also been set up at City Hall where Arthus-Bertrand’s team managed everything. Comprised of assistants and technical experts, they worked together to provide diverse backgrounds, flattering lighting, and necessary guidance for the best possible portraits. Visitors noted how approachable the atmosphere felt, emboldening them to embrace this unique opportunity.

Beyond aesthetics, the project serves as sociological documentation. Historian Hervé Le Bras collaborated with Arthus-Bertrand to leverage this undertaking, ensuring its narrative extends beyond mere visuals. The results will culminate not only in photographs but also written works, including books scheduled for release from late 2025.

This creative collaboration is seen as part of Arthus-Bertrand's larger mission to humanize communities through powerful imagery. After over three decades of compiling portraits throughout France, he remains dedicated to reflecting the living experiences of people across various regions.

Looking forward, the photographic project is set to continue its tour throughout France, stopping next at various cities leading up to several highly anticipated exhibitions. With much vibrancy brought to coastal Marseille, this engagement extends far beyond its temporal existence at La Canebière—inviting us to reflect on our own representations, identities, and the shared humanity among diverse communities.
