On October 8th, Yamamoto Shinji made his highly anticipated debut at the Japan Racing Association (JRA), riding Seiun Osmium, a three-year-old stallion trained by Takahiro Mizuno. Competing at the Tokyo Racecourse, Yamamoto's first performance placed him 15th after four rides throughout the day.
Despite the initial setback, his performance drew emotional support from his wife, talent Yabe Miho, who was seen with tears as she reflected on the day. "This is my husband's dream, and I’m so happy he achieved it," she shared after the race, expressing not only pride but also immense gratitude for those who aided them on this pivotal day.
Yamamoto's thrill at finally racing on this grand stage reflected positively as he stated, "I felt great; the track was spacious, and I didn’t feel the number of competitors." This enthusiasm was echoed after each race, where he had humble words about the experience and acknowledged the support from fellow jockeys, including Miura Kousei who helped him adjust before the race. "Everyone helped me get settled. Miura was great at providing insights on the environment here, even though we are competitors."
He competed aboard Seiun Osmium in the 2nd race, followed by Seiun Pikaichi and Osore, finishing eighth and fifteenth respectively, and also rode Nishino Koodukool, coming eighth again. Yamamoto was appreciative, stating, "It feels wonderful to get this chance to ride for Nishiyama Shigeyuki, who had faith and prepared three mounts for me today. I hope to continue and improve on my performance."
Yabe Miho also sent encouraging remarks, emphasizing her husband's dedication and craftsmanship as a jockey. "He has always wanted to feel the horse's reactions personally, riding barehanded to pick up fine sensations. I am happy he could fulfill the ambition we often discussed over the years. It’s surreal to have finally come this far."
The couple expressed continued optimism about Yamamoto's future, anticipating subsequent races and opportunities at JRA, stressing their strong family support. Yabe wrapped up her poignant reflections by declaring, "I can hardly believe we've reached this stage. I am incredibly proud of him!"
This debut caps Yamamoto’s significant transition from local turf, where he recorded 249 victories since beginning his career back on April 97. Known as a consistent performer at Kawasaki, he garnered five wins this year alone, establishing quite the reputation before his entrance to JRA.
The passion, hard work, and dreams reflected through this debut resonate not only for Yamamoto but also through all aspiring jockeys witnessing his humble yet meaningful step forward. It's clear this riveting experience at JRA is just the beginning for Yamamoto and his fervent supporters, who continue to rally behind his racing ambitions.
Fans will undoubtedly be eager to watch how Yamamoto leverages this experience moving forward and whether he can turn today’s challenges and the support of loved ones, both personal and professional, to become a recognized name among JRA ranks.
