A tragic accident occurred on the night of February 7, 2025, when Officer Naoto Yamaguchi, 29, was fatally struck by a large truck as he was responding to another incident caused by icy road conditions. The accident unfolded on Route 2 near Nishinagano, Shuto Town, Iwakuni City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, around 11:40 PM.
According to reports from the Yamaguchi Prefectural Police, Officer Yamaguchi was stopped on the road, talking with the driver of another vehicle involved in a prior accident due to the slick roads. Suddenly, from behind, a truck, which likely lost traction on the icy surface, collided with both Yamaguchi and the parked vehicle.
Emergency services were called, and Officer Yamaguchi was transported to the hospital. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries approximately two hours later. The cause of death was confirmed to be hemorrhagic shock.
The truck was operated by a 26-year-old man from Su'é Town, Fukuoka Prefecture, who also sustained minor injuries during the incident. Authorities indicated they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident, particularly the possibility of the truck’s slip on the icy surface contributing to the collision.
This incident is particularly noteworthy due to Officer Yamaguchi’s background. Not only was he dedicated to his role as a police officer, but he was also well-known as a successful athlete. He was recognized for his exceptional talent as a Greco-Roman wrestler, having won the All-Japan Senior Championship three times and competed at the 130 kg level.
Friends, family, and colleagues expressed their disbelief and sorrow about the tragic event, recognizing Officer Yamaguchi not just as a colleague but as somebody who inspired many with his athletic achievements and dedication to public service.
The icy conditions on the roads had led to numerous incidents throughout the area, with reports of multiple vehicles stranded on Route 2 due to snow and ice. Local transportation agencies were actively working to manage the hazardous conditions, but the tragic fate of Officer Yamaguchi highlights the inherent dangers faced by first responders every day.
Officials have conveyed their condolences, acknowledging the sacrifice Officer Yamaguchi made to protect and serve the community. The Yamaguchi Prefectural Police department has reminded motorists to exercise extreme caution when driving under adverse weather conditions.
Investigations are continuing, looking closely at both the truck driver's actions leading up to the accident and the broader road conditions at the time. Listening to residents and fellow officers, it’s clear the community is mourning the loss of one of its dedicated members.
This incident serves as a sober reminder of the risks police officers face when they are out on the streets, ensuring public safety during the most treacherous conditions.
Officer Naoto Yamaguchi's contributions to law enforcement and his outstanding athletic record will not be forgotten, as many look to honor his legacy and commitment to both his profession and sport.
