Yakima And McAlester Celebrate Community Events Return

Diverse activities cater to residents as towns come alive with festivals and initiatives

Community events are back and buzzing with energy as the towns of Yakima and McAlester gear up for exciting engagements this fall. Residents are eager to step out and participate, showcasing not only their festive spirit but also their commitment to community wellness and fun.

First up is Yakima, which is hosting the much-anticipated Shreds & Meds event on Saturday, October 26. This initiative, organized by the Yakima County Sheriff's Office, Yakima County Crime Stoppers, and Safe Yakima Valley, offers residents the perfect opportunity to declutter their personal documents securely and dispose of unused medications safely. From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Greater Yakima Chamber of Commerce, residents can bring old financial records, checks, and expired prescription drugs, ensuring these items are disposed of properly and safely. According to the organizers, "No cost is associated with this event, but donations are appreciated." It's not just about cleaning up; it’s about community safety and awareness surrounding identity theft and drug abuse.

Meanwhile, McAlester is also rolling out the welcome mat for visitors and locals alike with several engaging activities this coming weekend. The highlight is undoubtedly the legendary Big Boy No. 4014, which will arrive on October 13, making a stop as part of its Heartland of America Tour. Weighing about 1.2 million pounds, this steam locomotive symbolizes America's rich railroad history and will be available for public viewing near North Main Street and West Stonewall Avenue. The anticipation is palpable as people plan to see this massive train before it continues its tour through Kansas. Local shops will also be open to accommodate visitors, promising local flavors and festive fun.

The excitement doesn’t stop there for McAlester, as the town also heads for the rhythm of music with several performances lined up. The Dancing Rabbit Music Festival is kicking off with artists like Rob Ickes & Trey Hensley, who are well-known stars on the Grand Ole Opry circuit. This event, scheduled for Thursday evening, promises to be both entertaining and enchanting.

Equally, the Choctaw Music Fest is slated to happen at the Choctaw Casino and Resort, featuring star-studded performances including Grammy winner Megan Moroney kicking off the festival. Festival-goers can look forward to nights filled with music, food, and community as they gather at the casino’s Grand Theater from October 10-13. The excitement of live music resonates through the town, inviting all to let loose and enjoy the performances.

McAlester truly has packed the entertainment calendar this weekend. From Wiggle Worms at the library to karaoke nights at local venues, the town is ensuring there’s something for everyone. For families, the library is packed with activities like the Genealogy Workshop and their Story Time sessions for toddlers.

The integration of such community events has been welcomed warmly by both cities' residents, signaling not just the return of normalcy post-pandemic but also encouraging social interactions and community bonding. The varied agendas curated by local organizations reflect the community’s warmth and commitment to making both Yakima and McAlester delightful places to live.

With so much happening, residents of both towns have shown excitement and eagerness not just to attend, but to engage and celebrate the beauty of local community. These events promote not only fun but also community pride and awareness, promoting friendly gatherings and encouraging connections among residents.

Whether you're enjoying the nostalgic feel of the Big Boy train, shredding old documents for safety, or sitting back to enjoy music at one of the many venues, both Yakima and McAlester offer vibrant scenes for everyone to enjoy. So mark your calendars and head out this weekend to partake in the revitalized social scene, meet your neighbors, and savor all the fun!
