Xiaomi Launches 15 And 15 Ultra Smartphones At MWC 2025

The new flagship devices reveal advanced AI features and cutting-edge cameras.

Barcelona buzzed with excitement as Xiaomi unveiled its latest flagship smartphones, the Xiaomi 15 and Xiaomi 15 Ultra, during the prestigious Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025. Continuing its push toward high-end devices, Xiaomi aims to challenge market leader Samsung with its new offerings. Priced at 999 euros (around $1,047) for the Xiaomi 15 and 1,499 euros ($1,571) for the Ultra model, these devices are equipped with some of the most advanced technology available.

At the heart of both smartphones is Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Mobile Platform, renowned for its power and performance. Expert analyst Ben Wood from CCS Insight noted, "Xiaomi has been hugely successful of building its brand with affordable technology, but now it's moving up the value chain as it moves more toward premium devices, which is well-suited to the European market where we see an affluent audience." Indeed, the company is transitioning from budget-friendly offerings to devices appealing to tech enthusiasts, as evidenced by impressive yearly growth—global shipments rose by 15.4% last year, according to International Data Corporation (IDC).

The Xiaomi 15 Ultra is laden with standout camera features, including four Leica-tuned lenses, with the main rear camera utilizing the impressive 1-inch Sony LYT-900 sensor. With the addition of a whopping 200-megapixel periscope telephoto lens, users can enjoy sophisticated photography capabilities, including 4.3x optical zoom and advanced stabilization features usually reserved for professional-grade cameras. This image technology, combined with AI enhancements, presents photography enthusiasts with capabilities unmatched by most mobile competitors.

The design of the 15 Ultra is equally captivating, featuring a dual-tone finish reminiscent of classic Leica cameras. The build incorporates leather-like materials on top of its aluminum frame, offering both aesthetics and comfort. Weighing 220 grams and measuring just 9.48 mm thick, the device feels balanced and manageable.

The device's video capabilities are just as impressive, shooting stunning 4K at 60 frames per second with Dolby Vision support. The primary camera can handle intense workloads up to 4K at 120fps and even 8K video at 30fps. The quality of both video and sound capture suggests Xiaomi has taken the step of integrating professional-grade tools directly within its latest smartphone.

Battery life is another competitive advantage for the Xiaomi 15 Ultra, equipped with a 5,410mAh silicon-carbon battery. It supports rapid 90-watt wired charging and 80-watt wireless charging, ensuring users can swiftly juice up their devices, even during heavy usage. Qualitatively, the display features go beyond the norm with its 6.73-inch AMOLED screen, boasting 2K+ resolution and brightness peaking at 3,200 nits, promising immersive visuals for viewing and gaming experiences.

Interestingly, the company's venture beyond smartphones isn't overlooked. It has expanded to include various connected devices, from TVs to smartwatches, and recently dipped its toes in the electric vehicle market with its SU7 model. Francisco Jeronimo of IDC emphasized how the move toward electric vehicles helps Xiaomi's broader brand image: "They are using the car as leverage to build on their brand, which I think is clever. Consumers understand the innovation behind building both cars and smartphones, equaling positive brand perception.”

To add to its appeal, Xiaomi has announced enticing benefits for first-time users of the 15 series, including one out-of-warranty repair and free screen replacement within the first six months of purchasing.

Despite these strengths, the competition remains fierce. The premium smartphone space is awash with options, particularly from fellow Chinese manufacturers like Oppo and Honor. Analysts express concern over Xiaomi’s efforts to take market share away from Samsung, noting the saturation of the premium segment. According to Wood, "The premium space is now unbelievably crowded… any Android maker seeking to grow must take shares from another contender, presenting challenges for Xiaomi.”

User experience may define real success for the Xiaomi 15 and 15 Ultra. Both run on Android 15, featuring the company's HyperOS, which encompasses isolated pre-installed apps shared on similar platforms. While many commend HyperOS for performance, the prevalence of bloatware received mixed reviews from users. Enhanced scrutiny will likely focus on how Xiaomi balances the cleanliness of its user experience with its expansive hardware offers.

With advances solidifying Xiaomi's push for premium market placement, the company’s stock surged nearly 300% over the past year, showcasing the anticipation surrounding its new devices. The Xiaomi 15 series promises to capture the attention of tech enthusiasts and casual users alike, as pre-orders loom closer, with anticipated availability reaching markets including India by March 11, 2025.

Moving forward, Xiaomi's strategies will have to encompass more than just hardware specifications to distinguish itself distinctly. By fortifying its existing reputation and fending off competitors, the company stands on the precipice of what may prove to be one of the most pivotal points of its evolution.
