ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Mich. – A tragic accident on Interstate 94 early Friday morning has left one man dead and another critically injured. The St. Clair County Sheriff's Office reported that the incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. on April 18, 2025, when a wrong-way driver caused a head-on collision.
Deputies were dispatched to the area near County Line Road after receiving multiple reports of a blue Dodge Charger traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-94 at a high rate of speed. As deputies were en route, they learned that a crash had already taken place.
The collision involved the Dodge Charger and a Ford Explorer, occurring near Church Road in Casco Township. The driver of the Charger, a 28-year-old man from Harper Woods, was pronounced dead at the scene. The other vehicle's driver, a 32-year-old man from Flint, was rushed to McLaren Macomb Hospital with critical injuries.
Authorities closed the westbound lanes of I-94 for several hours while they conducted their investigation. The St. Clair County Sheriff's Office Accident Investigation Team is currently looking into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
This incident is part of a troubling trend of wrong-way driving accidents in Michigan. Just last month, a driver was arrested for a similar offense on the Southfield Freeway, where alcohol was a contributing factor. Additionally, earlier this year, two people lost their lives in a head-on collision with a wrong-way driver in Troy.
According to data from the Michigan State Police, from April 7 to April 14, 2025, there were 26 fatalities on Michigan roadways, bringing the total number of deaths this year to 232. This figure represents a slight decrease compared to the same period last year, which saw 20 more fatalities. However, the number of serious injuries has remained concerning, with 1,008 people reported injured statewide.
